Iam in the process of planning a trip to France with two friends cycling this summer. I could sure use some input on rides in southern France. Any input on shipping bikes,possible places to stay, things of that nature would be greatly apprieciated. If anyone has ridden any tour routes, info on that would be great too! I will be in France this summer for five weeks (July 3-August 10) and plan on taking a bicycle on the trip. I will have at least two 10 day periods where I can ride in any part of the country that I like. I am interested in riding some of the cols in the Alps or Pyrenees and possibly Mont Ventoux. I am not all that interested in joining an organized tour as they are expensive and restrict one to a specific itinerary. I would like to find city or town to use as a hub and be able to do several rides from the same place as opposed to touring and camping out. Another possibility is finding a service to transfer my luggage to my next destination. I can rent a car if necessary but prefer to use the train as much as possible. I speak functional French so language is not a problem. Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences that they would be willing to share?
