(regards to shaft drive...) he used for high speed events, not for sprinting. but the design was actually quite good in that it was efficient, unlike most modern "differentials" where the sliding action of right angle gears wastes a lot of energy (ie main reason front wheel drive cars are more efficient then rwd) [but surface contact area is needed to transmit the power of a vehicle]. This design used some sort of balls on end of fingers point-contact onto and rotating on plates... something like that, I can picture it in my head, i read about it somewhere or it was in the book by Ritchie. As you can imagine, it must have been somewhat hard to tweak, and somewhat flexible especially under high start torque loads. So the chain drive was used for sprint type racing that he did, in the "nascar" type circuit races he competed in. BTW, Major was a hell of machinist / technical type, and really wanted to get a formal engineering education, of course not
accepted(in my opinion, tragically) . With a little math and physics under his belt, we can only wonder at what he may have come up with.
