Rust question

At the risk of sounding less than caring..trying to remove the rust on a
cog..is not worth the effort.riding the bike and using the cog will take
most of the rust off (obviously where the chain bears on the cog) if the
rust is down by the cog body it would be very difficult to remove it and it
would come back anyway unless you could re-plate the cog somehow.again, not
worth the effort

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Rust question

First off, let me acknowledge the fact that I am a bonehead for not cleaning
the bike sooner after last weekend's Fairground Cross Crusade race. I
finally got around to getting the muck/ dirt off the parts today. The bike
is completely stripped and for the most part, ready to be put back together
again.

That being said, as I was cleaning the cassette tonight, I noticed what
looked like rust on the last few rings of the cassette (from the 17 to the
25). I don't recall it being there when I cleaned the bike after the
previous race, so I can only assume it got there in the week that the bike
has been sitting caked with mud. The rust is confined to the just the teeth
of the cassette and the cassette is a 10 speed Ultegra.

My question to those who are more knowledgeable than I is: Any good
recommendations to get it off? I would hate to buy a new cassette when I can
just clean this off.

Thanks.

Dave
