The Italians are coming!

Join the crew of WebCyclery for the 1979 classic, Breaking Away, the kinda cheesy - but very good Hollywood view of bike racing culture from back in the days of toe clips and hairnets. This film won the Oscar for best screenplay that year.

Here's the plot: Dave (Dennis Christopher), nineteen, has just graduated high school, with his 3 friends, The comical Cyril (Daniel Stern), the warm hearted but short-tempered Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley), and the athletic, spiteful but good-hearted Mike (Dennis Quaid). Now, Dave enjoys racing bikes and hopes to race the Italians one day, and even takes up the Italian culture, much to his friends and parents annoyance. While meanwhile, the 4 friends try to break away from their small town, Indiana reputation while fighting with nearby college snobs.

If you haven't seen Breaking Away at least once, then you're not quite ready to call yourself a real cyclist!

Kevin Gorman, a film critic known for his thumbs-up and thumbs-down reviews with his brother and fellow critic, Mean Todd, has praised Breaking Away and heralded it as "The sweetest 1979 Dennis Quaid with no shirt on bike racing movie ever!" Mean Todd continued the accolades and added, "As long as you're going to be at McMenamins drinking a beer, you might was well be watching Breaking Away at the same time."

While WebCyclery Movie Night at McMenamins is a fund raiser for Central Oregon Trail Alliance (cotamtb.com), it is mostly an excuse to get together with a theater full of like-minded cyclists to watch kick-ass bicycle movies, drink a beer, raise some money for local trails, and maybe win a cool door prize.
