Jim Anderson
Team Oregon received this and we wanted to pass this along.
This is a good model to follow and should be considered at ALL OBRA events
in the future when applicable.

"Rchristensen"
Hi all team managers
My name is robert christensen and as most of you know i will be spear
heading the
recycling effort with 1-800 GOT JUNK at the USGP. Like last year i
will be attempting to
make this event as much of a "zero waste " event as possible. This
year we have a small
challenge. To make this a zero waste without all of the biodegradable
glass, plates,
bowls, and flat ware. That is reason i'm contacting most of the teams
and talking up the
idea of bringing your own.
Last year over 5000 people for the two day event and we were able to
recycle 1210lbs of
cardboard, glass, metal, and paper. we sent 340 lbs of biodegradable
food waste and
280lbs for non-recoverable waste to the landfills.
the problem this year is the company that brought the corn based
cook-ware will not be a
sponsor, which in turn will more than DOUBLE the amount of
non-recoverable waste. The
kind of waste we dont want in the land fills.
what you can do
1. BRING YOUR OWN. going to eat bring a plate, and everybody is going
to drink so bring
your favorite pimp cauldron
2. dont throw it away if its not on the can. PLEASE last year we spent
a couple of hours
getting food waste out of the recycling bins. nasty! (help a brother out)
3. make sure that all food waste is out of "whatever" you are throwing
away. an empty
wrapper weighs nothing but leave half of your energy bar in and you
just increased your
waste by at least a 1000%.
4. bring anything not on the cans to my truck. this includes
Styrofoam, Wood, empty chain
lube bottles..........
5. send out this e-mail to anyone who plans on attending
6. spread the word
what i will do
more and easier to understand recycling stations. we will be using
Portlands Green Can
system so we will only need 3 cans per station. 1."green can" 2. food
waste only 3.
contaminated by food waste/ not recoverable
Number 3 is the one we want at about 100lbs for the weekend but it
will be hard. this
includes anything that has touched food, from plastic cookware, food
packaging, and
PLASTIC BAGS. (please take your plastic bags home they are not
recyclable keep them out
of the green cans. this includes being full of empty beer cans, the
bag is still not
"green" dump out cans keep plastic bag or place in number 3 can)
thanx for your time
robert
aka. graz
ps. the largest amount last year was the banners and tape, if we have
a weekend like last
year it would be great to find a better use for the them. (44olbs last
year) hopefully
not.
