Anybody care to wager whether or not drinking was involved with that
incident?

Mike,
I am sure you could tell many interesting and or odd ER stories, but this
one has introduced us to a very strange dude. I hope whatever profession he
is involved in, I never need to deal with him.

Rabies virus, in most cases, need to be injected into tissue or exposed to
mucosal tissue. There are some cases of possible respiratory exposure in
people exposed to bat guano while in caves but it is unclear whether this is
actually a transmission route. I would suggest just washing the grip with
soap and not sucking on it.

Those rabies statistics are kind of sobering. I had a head-on with a bat
while riding my motorcycle home from work late one night. I wasn't
wearing a helmet (this was back when that was still legal) and I had
just enough time to nod my head so it impacted the top of my head rather
than my face. It's unlikely it survived judging by the feel of it. I also
found one dead in the bed of my pickup coming home with my MTB in
the back another night much more recently. It appears to have been hit
by handlebar end (which hangs out from the side of the truck a little)
and bounced into the bed. I was very careful in disposing of it. Do you
think it would have been a good idea to decontaminate my grip somehow as
well?

If the dead animal is available the brain can be tested. This service is
performed by the state for public health monitoring purposes. Rabies vaccine
has an inappropriate reputation which goes back to the original vaccines
which were essentially pureed brain tissue from infected animals. They were
simple to produce but required large volumes, many injections and had
frequent complications. Modern cell culture derived vaccine require much
less volume of material, fewer injections and are less like to produce
complications. The vaccine is only 5 shots over a 1 month period, not fun
but sure better than getting rabies.

We had a patient coming to our place for rabies vaccine a few years ago. He
was staying in a cabin with other people when a bat flew in. They chased
the bat and killed it and then this genius bit the head off the bat. At one
point during the series of injections he asked us if, now that he was
vaccinated, this meant he could bite the next bat and not worry about it.
For those who might have his inclinations, the answer is "No".

My favorite doctor says you should catch the bat to check for rabies if
possible, because rabies shots are still no fun, even in the 21st century.

Oh, and I got harassed all summer long by red-winged blackbirds on Helvetia
road in 2007.

Had a very near miss once when some Guinea Fowl (turkey sized African
birds that don't fly very well) flew across the road. We were going
downhill, with the wind, speed over 40 mph - would not have been pretty
if we hadn't ducked and skimmed underneath them!

My favorite doctor says you should catch the bat to check for rabies
if possible, because rabies shots are still no fun, even in the 21st
century.

Oh, and I got harassed all summer long by red-winged blackbirds on
Helvetia road in 2007.

I doubt that this will happen to anyone else but should it people should
know that this is an indication for getting rabies vaccine. In fact, if you
wake up at night with a bat in your bedroom that is also an indication for
vaccination, even if you don't think that you had a bite or any actual
contact with the bat. Rabies infection is uniformly fatal. There are only 2
cases of survival from active rabies infection and a handful of people who
survived after developing rabies despite vaccination.

Well.Saturday morning was interesting.

Riding along out by Forest Grove in the country..double paceline about
20mph..about 18 riders about mile 20 of 65..

Minding my own business.chattin' it up..

Someone yells "CHICKEN!!!"

I look up.black chicken flying right toward me at 2:00!! I brace for the
impact.the guy to my right in front of me

takes the hit (Dan? good thing, he probably had 60 pounds on me at least)
from the projectile.

Everyone hits the brakes, people are swerving and yelling out
directions..chicken flailing on the ground..I missed the foul

by about 12"..all happened in about 2 seconds.

No one went down...no injuries, no beak impalement, just a few feathers.
Have no idea as to the status of the chicken.

be safe out there.

I was harassed by Geese while fixing a flat....
Safety tip: Geese are not affected by pepper spray but a wheel makes a
pretty good shield.

I hit a deer in the 1989 Tour de Coast. We were coming down from the
mountains through a blind corner at about 30mph. It happened so quick I
didn't even see the deer before I hit it (just a wall of brown fur) and
flew over it. After tumbling, I looked back and it looked at me with a
"what's your problem" kind of look before springing off into the woods. I
was a little scraped up, but I got back up and finished the race.

I'm pretty well known in the WA state women's peloton for hitting a
chicken in 2006 while riding though farm country in the Vance Creek
RR. It flew right into my front wheel. Witnesses claim the chicken
ran off and looked okay, but then again, chickens can run around even
with their heads cut-off.

Not sure I've lived that one down yet.
