windproof tocque

NW Cyclist

2008-12-11

I wear the Gore Wind Stopper Skull Cap and it does a great job of keeping my
ears warm...but the Wind Stopper significantly reduces your ability to hear
traffic or the guy in front of you when riding in a group and he says "Bump"
or "Hole" or "Glass"

It's amazing that no one has figured out a proper Oregon cycling hat. Out of disgust for the expensive, but stylish, but nonfunctional crap that gets sold I finally made my own:

1. Very important: Full baseball cap bill (cycling cap short bills just don't work, you need to keep the rain off the face, psychologically it makes a huge difference, almost like its not raining, even if it is)

2. Not to thick on the main part. I like a thin supplex or maybe even mesh.. basically a summer running cap is nearly perfect, since its not cotton. Any thicker and your head will uncomfortably overheat.

3. MOST IMPORTANT: EarFlaps ! I made mine double layer: wicking layer or lycra (old shorts) under nylon windproof layer. Also, use lycra or elastic strap attached to the two flaps near the bottom, that goes around the back of your head, This and your helmet straps will keep the flaps against your ears. see:
http://picasaweb.google.com/schmidjo/EBAYAndCraigslist#

The black hat is was actually able to find and buy.. its thin, but two layers on the main part of the hat make it too warm for anything over 45 degrees..

The white mesh hat is a little too cool for under 45.. had another one but lost it uses pearl izumi running hat. the ear flaps are bigger than need be, but work.

Note that if you need something quick and fast, cut out some material,(triple up some lycra, or whatever spare material you have laying around). and simply Safety pin too your baseball cap. After getting it tweaked, go to your local seamtress or friend with a sewing machine and stitch it on. Or 15 minutes handstitching.. Avoid caps with the round button on the top unless your helmet has a vent that it will fit into.

Happy rainy cold cycling.

Gore makes this cycling specific piece. Windstopper all the way around
the bottom half. Longer on the sides to cover the ears. Fleece on top.
http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodGB_HHELMT.html

Craft makes a cycling skull cap that's windproof on the front half,
thermal on the back.
http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodCR_197665.html

If you are wearing a helmet cover and are really just looking for
something to cover the ears ONLY, Craft also has a windproof headband:
http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodCR_197666.html

If you're looking for overall warmth, but don't really need "windproof",
try this awesome Wool piece from Ibex.

I hope these suggestions help.

"tocque" = Canadian word (from the French) for "warm, winter cap".
Pronounced "tuke", rhymes with "kook."

Does anyone in OBRA-land know of a windproof tocque? My ears are getting
froze.

Thanks.
