The Bull Ride

Casper Classic 1990 or so... cat 3 field.. shirley basin, open range, 100 mile race. Our one support vehicle had to go up ahead and clear the road. The ole bull didn't like it too much and charged... The official gunned it and barely got out of there. Turned around and with horn and exiting herd, enough incentive for the bull to leave. We were all still about a quarter mile away coming downgrade, enjoying the entertainment, with new respect for our official. We were doing beautiful echelons, and in the days of 32 36 spoke box section wheels, still managed a 3:45 century.

Years ago on the Alsea Falls loop down outside of Corvallis and few of us were making our way towards the climb on a perfect fall weather ride. No traffic and talking it up 3 across on the road we noticed a large object on the road ahead.

I said, "That's gotta be the biggest dog in the road up there!"
Gerard chimed in "That's no dog it's a mule or horse"
As we continued closing we all realized but Craig verbalized, "That's a bull in the middle of the road!"

We came to a standstill about 100 yards short and the bull wavered in the road and moved down into the ditch. Craig took the opportunity to say he was going for it. Gerard and I settled back down onto our top tubes to watch the matador do his work. Making snide remarks the whole time we wanted him to make it, but like any good bullfight we wanted some excitement.

We saw Craig rise out of the saddle and begin his sprint at the same time the bull began to take an interest. I almost dropped my water bottle mid drink as we watched the bull begin to haul himself from the ditch and make a move for Craig. Craig's odds were dropping like a rock, but he was in full sprint and not turning back. Hitting the pavement the bull rolled a tubular off one of his front hooves and momentarily lost traction. Craig was past and seconds later waving for us to join him.

The bull now agitated as ever was back in the middle of the road.

Gerard looked at me, "I think I'll bat clean-up on this one. Why don't you go?"

Before I could respond a Big Ol Caddy came down the road approaching from the rear. Behind the wheel was 300 lbs under a cowboy hat working a 90 ounce slurpee in one hand and the steering wheel in the other. Rolling down the window, "That bull out again? I'll take care of it."

With some horn honking and full road weaving the Cowboy, the Caddy, and that slurpee worked the bull down the next drive way and back home.

We road back up to Craig congratulated him on being the equivalent of "seven men" that day and enjoyed the rest of the ride.

I'm pretty well known in the WA state women's peloton for hitting a chicken in 2006 while riding though farm country in the Vance Creek RR. It flew right into my front wheel. Witnesses claim the chicken ran off and looked okay, but then again, chickens can run around even with their heads cut-off.

Not sure I've lived that one down yet.
