Dan,
See if the following works for you. I have ridden this route and find it
acceptable.
>From Washington Square go East on Hall (no bike lane)
Left on Oleson Rd (partial bike lane)
Cross Garden Home
(If you want a neighborhood option: Right on SW Canby. Canby becomes SW 60th
when it turns left and goes up hill. Right on SW Nevada Ct. Left on SW
52nd. Right on Vermont)
If you do not want the neighborhood option:
Continue on Oleson until you turn right on SW Vermont. There is no shoulder
on Vermont (1.2 miles) until you cross SW 45th.
Continue on Vermont up hill past SW 45th (Bike lane)
Just past the Jewish Community Center turn right to stay on SW Vermont and
go down the hill. (no bike lane, but not needed here)
Right on SW Bertha (Bike Lane)
Left at SW Barbur (there is lots of traffic here so be sure to take the
lane. I have found the left turn lane is best since cars in the right lane
are trying to enter the freeway). (No Bike Lane)
Right SW Terwilliger. (Bike Lane)
Stay on SW Terwilliger all the way to Lake Oswego. There is a bike path
from Barbur and Terwilliger all the way to Lewis and Clark Law School.
After the law school, just stay to the right of the roadway if you can ride
at 23 mph down hill.
If you want to go slowly, there is a multi use path on the south side of the
street as SW Boones Ferry intersects with Terwilliger. This path is narrow
and can be quite slippery with moss and leaves. Use at your own risk: there
are joggers, cyclists and dogs on this trail.

I must be missing something, but going north from Washington Square to end
up south of Washington Square seems a bit odd to me, with lots of extra
climbing and several nasty intersections. Hall Blvd is pretty wide, safe,
and doesn't cross anything but 99, and you can ride it all the way to
Bonita, which takes you into Lake Grove. It's about a 15 minute ride from
Washington Square to downtown Lake O that way.

Vermont is pretty sketchy - no shoulder in places, and although I haven't
been on it in rush hour, I would guess that it gets pretty good traffic.
Multnomah might be better for bikes and also a more direct route than
Vermont. There is something on the map that extends from Multnomah across
Barbur and I5 and connects to Terwilliger, but I don't know if after
crossing Barbur it continues to be Multnomah or is a different street.
Depending on where you are going in LO, I agree that your target might be SW
Terwilliger all the way into town.

I haven't done this for a while, but I'd take Oleson north to Vermont,
go east to the Bertha/Terwilliger interchange to cross I5, and then find
your way to Sellwood Bridge to cross the river.

Do any af you have any suggestions for a good route to ride from the
Wash. Square area to Lk Oswego? I tried the by-cycle deal and most of
the route looks good but some of it is dubious, especially the way they
have me navigating the crazy area where I-5 and 217 converge.
The best advice would be which streets to avoid, especially at "rush"
hour.
Thanks.
Dan
