Here is the link to the original quote:
http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2009/jan09/jan22news2
The reference was from stage 3 of TDU when Lance was in the break.
Lance said, "I think it's the kind of stuff I need to do, I need to get in
the race and work that top end," he said. "Like I've said 100 times here, I
can't get that in training so the more I can be out there... I mean, I
looked down at my power metre and the average after two hours was 340 watts,
you can't do that in training. You're just constantly going and going and
going."

Scroll down where? I got the same link Michael got and I scrolled down
in both the e-mail and the article and I didn't see anything about
Armstrong's two hours at 340 watt output.

Hey Michael -

This chart will have some info for you about wattage for different abilities
for different time frames. It's not relevant to speak only in terms of
wattage, this information needs to be in relation to body weight. Here, the
watts/kg chart is useful to you compare data and determine strengths and
weaknesses. The 5 sec column is indicative of neuromuscular power
(sprinting), the 1 min column is comparable to anaerobic power, the 5 min to
VO2 power, and FTP is indicative of maximal aerobic power (40k time trial).
This chart is pretty useful.

Also, if you are curious about power over long distance, you might look at
what these guys can do over 112 miles...

I hope the links work!

OK, let's put things in perspective. What's a "typical" hour-plus wattage
for:

1) An amateur "local hero" sort of bike racer.

2) A "civilian weekend rider"

At the other end of the spectrum, what wattage can a TourdeFrance level
sprinter achieve?

There's no future in comparing yourself to Lance Armstrong...
