Gearing for SS MTB racing

Gearing for SS should be the MAX you can turn over at at jogging speed. Why? Because you want the biggest gear possible for flat and downhill sections. SS is not about riding all the time but running the super-steep uphills and going as fast as possible both on and off the bike. I ride 38-17 with 26" wheel. I would use that gear for any course as long as it has uphills. That is what I used at Mt Ashland hillclimb with virtually no downhill.

That doesn't mean it is the right gear for others, though. Figure out how slow you can pedal and how fast you can run uphill and go one tooth smaller cog!

Good luck!

PS. Try the Rotor Q-Ring for single speed. It will allow anyone to ride 2 teeth larger chainring with no apparent difference!

Will,

At Mudslinger and Hornings I used a 36/21 on my 29" wheels. Both places
were a bit muddy and slow. If it was dry at Bear Springs I, personally,
would try using a 36/19.

I'm using a 36/26 on 29" wheels at Scappoose right now. Where as, last
Summer I was using a 36/18 on the same bike.

I tried a 36/16 on 29" wheels at the PIR short tack and it seemed OK for me.

I run the same gear ration for short track that I run for cross. I have not
done a cross country race single speed. So I would also like to hear what
people run for something like Bear Springs.

Well first we should calculate gear inches or gain. Gear inches are
calculated by tire size, gear gain is tire size and crank length as
variables. I would first figure your gear inches as tire size has an
effect I wouldn't run the same ratio on my 29' SS as my 26' SS or
Cyclocross bike for that matter. I suggest consulting the authority www.sheldonbrown.com
this may give you some clarity on gear ratios!

So 2x1 ratio is fine for 'cross but what do those of you who race SS for MTB season have set up? It's gotta be closer to a 1x1 ratio, yeah?

Let me know what size chain-ring & cog combo you're running. I'm pushing a 34x19 for Forest Park but that would be ridiculous for races with "real" climbs.

Off list is perfect.
