Re: SS gearing

My first year of XC racing when I rode my single speed... I had a 32 X 18 on 29er. I rode most things, but really spun out quick. That was races like Rheehers, Bear Springs and Ski Bowl courses where it worked best. It was races like Picketts where the gearing was too low. I race the same bike at PIR short track with a 42x20 and love it. If I were to try XC single speed again, I would probably adjust more for each race, now that I know them better... although promoters can throw new stuff at you each year.

If I remember correctly, man people tend to run 32 X 20 for XC racing in OR.

I run the same gear ration for short track that I run for cross. I have not done a cross country race single speed. So I would also like to hear what people run for something like Bear Springs.

So 2x1 ratio is fine for 'cross but what do those of you who race SS for MTB season have set up? It's gotta be closer to a 1x1 ratio, yeah?

Let me know what size chain-ring & cog combo you're running. I'm pushing a 34x19 for Forest Park but that would be ridiculous for races with "real" climbs.

Off list is perfect.

I run a 32/15 MTB cross 34/14-16 depending. Running a gear that works for someone else might not be the gear for you. In a race you want the hardest gear you can push for that distance. It's going to change with the course and time of year. 2/1 is a good place to start.
