Cherry Pie Cat 3 damage report

Leibowitz, Flo

2009-02-19

Also a good lesson that having a person riding shotgun in lead and follow vehicles ..when they're available...is a good thing. I realize it's often hard enough to get volunteers to drive to begin with, but when they can enlist company for the drive, there are typically lots of things for the non driver to do. Especially in an emergency.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Cherry Pie Cat 3 damage report

Replying to TJ Pakewich's request:

Relatively good news on that scary Cat 3 mens crash on Sunday in the Cherry
Pie, an apparent broken collarbone and some hurt pride.

It was very scary to me when I drove up and saw the one rider lying in the
field a good 20 yards from the road with bike a fair ways away! I was Com 2
in the Cat 4 men's caravan, and as I had a first aid kit, a good radio, cell
phone contact with finish line, and lots of assistance with Brenda Spinney
riding shotgun; so we accelerated away from the Cat 4 caravan and went to
the crash. Yes, it looked like both riders launched off the road but landed
in a relatively soft field.

One of the crashed riders, forgot his kit but think it was red and black,
was actually an emergency medical technician (EMT) and knew what the heck to
do and that was really nice. He had the stricken, second rider lay down for
a bit. The rider down had several scuffs on his head, and an apparent
broken collarbone. The EMT and Brenda helped clean him up a bit while I was
on both cellphone and radio back to the finish line. Meanwhile the EMT
rider tested the stricken rider and he passed all the tests for back injury
so we gingerly had him stand and he walked slowly back to the car, including
the climb up that steep embankment. While Brenda and a few others helped him
get into my car, I loaned the EMT rider my tools and he straightened up his
bike and rode off with two fields behind him but the Cat 3 and 4 Peleton
hopelessly far in front of him. We made the injured rider as comfortable as
possible and drove slowly back to the staging area, where a friend was
dutifully waiting for him.

Back at his friend's car, he accepted my offer to tape his arm to his side
and run a few swaths of tape in a makeshift sling to immobilize the
collarbone as best as we could. He was still in a bit of shock, I know the
feeling as I have busted a collarbone before. But he was a real trooper.
His friend took him to the hospital and that was the last I heard. Would
like to hear a bit more if anybody does know anything more.

Oh yes, and if your gonna crash hope you have the good luck to have an EMT
crash buddy! :)

*Easton EC90 SL carbon road fork*, $200 negotiable. Retail is $399. Used
~ 100 miles. Steer tube length is 264 cm (10 3/8 inches). I am selling
this fork because I initially cut it too short for myself (an expensive
mistake). It has never been crashed, no scratches. I purchased it Nov
2008. Compression plug included.
Thanks.

There was also a crash of a couple of guys on the last lap with one guy
flying into the field. An update on their condition would be nice as
well.

There was a big pile up on the first lap of the cat 3 race. It looked
pretty nasty. I managed to get around it, but I'm interested to know if
everyone was OK.

Thanks,

Not sure if more than the two of us went down but here's what I think I
know- Feel free to post any amendments:

About 9 miles to go, about a third of the way back in the pack riding near
the right shoulder when the rider ahead of me apparently crossed wheels with
the rider in front of him on a 29mph sweeping left bend and went down hard
while taking me out as well.

The unfortunate rider ahead of me ended up 20+ feet off the road in the
field with the wind knocked out of him and a broken left collarbone. After
an assesment and a few minutes rest he was able to move about and was headed
to the hospital under his own power via race officials and carpool.

I ended up on the gravel slope bruised, road rashed and down a set of bibs
but luckily nothing worse.

Thanks to SG and the two (or three? its all a fog) race personnel for the
bandaids, tools, and assistance.

Hope the guys from the first lap made it out ok.......

Josh

?
The 2009 Veloforma Norman Babcock Cat 4 Women's Series presented by Garmin
is a bigger and better version of this race series launched in 2008: more
generous sponsors, more supportive race promoters, and more opportunities
for beginning riders to learn about the sport.
?
The race flyer for the series--including dates and locations of all the
events--is posted on the OBRA website:
?
http://www.obra.org/flyers/2009/cat_4_womens_series.html
?
The first race in the series is Banana Belt 3, and the competition stretches
through the road season all the way to the Eugene Celebration stage race.
?
In addition to the racing and prizes, there will be a series of post-race
coaching clinics, hosted by elite riders from the Oregon peloton.?At each
clinic, the racer-coaches will watch the race from the lead car or other
strategic location and then offer feedback on what happened during the race,
what could have happened, who made the winning move, what race tactics
played out during the race, etc.? This is a great way for new racers to get
more insight on what happens during a race.? These post-race clinics will
feature:
* ?March 15 Banana Belt 3: Russell Cree and Jeannette Rose from
Upper Echelon Fitness
* May 16 Mt. Tabor: Jan Moss of Team Group Health, winner of the
2008 masters women?s series on this course
* June 28 Salem-Fairview Circuit Race:? Select riders from the
Veloforma team
Please forward this message to your cat 4 teammates and to any women you
know who are thinking about bike racing.
?
And of course huge thanks go to our generous sponsors:

Bad news for Omer down in the Tour of California today:

14:55 PST
Two riders from today's stage, both crash victims, are on their way to the
Modesto hospital in an ambulance. Both riders crashed fairly early in the
stage, on the descent from Sierra Road. Omer Kem (Bissell) reportedly has a
broken femur. Ian MacGragor (Team Type 1) is the second rider in route. No
report yet on his injuries.

Here's wishing him a speedy recovery and hope that he didn't break his
femur.

Hello,

Every race needs a course observer and if you have 3 years or more
experience, we need you to participate in a local mountain bike race near
you. This is done by filling out a short survey/report in exchange you will
be entered into the race of your choice for Free with all the thanks from
OBRA for making sure the event is living up to the quality that OBRA
expects. This helps the promoter make changes year to year and keeps
everyone on task that someone is watching and representing the racers point
of view.

Check the OBRA schedule and send me a request for a first choice and a
second choice. This applies to all XC/Marathon events and you will remain
anonymous as not to contaminate your opinion.

Thanks

Mike Ripley

My Felt F1 bicycle was stolen on PSU campus on 2/17. It is a slighly older
model all aluminum flat black frame. It had carbon cranks, handlebars by
FSA. Easton stem and wheels with no decals. Dura-ace levers and derailleurs
and Ultegra brakes.

Please if you have any information or can keep an eye out for it, I thank

Just got word from Omer- he fractured his pelvis in today's stage.
He's in pretty severe pain- "the most pain he's ever experienced" and
this is coming from a guy who's raced with a broken shoulder blade and
with broken ribs. But... in typical Omer fashion, he's mobile - on
crutches. I gotta say he's tougher than pretty much any pro cyclist
out there and if OBRA could give out a "tough guy" award- he'd get it.
He will be back in Salem next week sometime.

Last October I was at the Oregon Manifest and I talked with a guy who was
selling a product called a reach around. This product is a bracket that
makes it easier to intall fenders on bikes with little frame clearance. I
should have bought one on the spot but didn't.

So, what I am asking now is, how can I obtain one of these? Where? How
much are they?

Thanks.

Good Morning Northwest Racers!

The Mt. Hood Cycling Classic is back and bigger than ever. For 2009 we are
bringing back the classic courses that you love and we are bring back the
CAT 4 men's field and CAT 3-4 women's field. Racing starts June 3rd for the
Pro 1-2 Men and Pro 1-3 women with the Panorama Point Prologue. Masters
35+/45+ men will start the next day at the Cooper Spur Circuit Race,
Thursday June 4th at 9:05 a.m. and the remaining categories will begin that
afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Here are just a few of the exciting things on tap
for 2009.

? Race will be a 5 day 5 stage format for the Pro 1-2 Men and Pro
1-3 Women. 4 days and 4 stages for the rest of the categories.

? After much deliberation we have arranged to include the most epic
and spectacular time trial in the country (the pros' words last year not
mine) in the Scenic Gorge Time Trial.

? New Wy'East Road Race course that starts and ends at Mt. Hood
Meadows (with the exception of the CAT 3-4 women)

? New CAT 3-4 Women's Wy'East course that will challenge you but not
decimate you.

? CAT 3 women get the option of racing with the Pro's or the 4's

? Shirts, pint glasses, killer swag, yeah it's all back.

? $20,000 in prize money and merchandise on the line.

Some things to note. The Pro 1-2 Men and Pro 1-3 Women's race will be run
under USA Cycling sanctioning and will have rolling enclosures provided for
full road access. The rest of the categories will be sanctioned under OBRA.
I am getting a ton of emails from teams and riders from across the U.S. that
have this event marked on their calendars. Looking at early numbers and
indicators we anticipate a huge turnout for 2009. This is your warning. Do
NOT wait until the day before registration ends to sign up. We do not hold
spots we do not reserve spots and we will strictly adhere to our field
limits. Historically the Pro 1-2 Men's field fills up 3-4 weeks out and the
CAT 3 men fill 6-7 weeks out but we also anticipate that the CAT 4 men's
field will fill as well. Registration is now open. Get signed up to assure
your spot. Also as many of you have found out in the past lodging is maxed
in Hood River and up at Cooper Spur. Book early to assure you are not
commuting in
from The Dalles. Website is now up and info posted at
www.mthoodcyclingclassic.com. Check it out and a cool video Sal Collura
shot and edited from last year's event. We look forward to seeing all of
you at the starting line in 2009!

Sincerely,

Chad

don't know about "reach around" but as far as I know this has been standard
way to mount fenders for decades. ?on a road bike, even if i have clearance
i don't bother trying to run it under the brake, too much trouble. ??
making one of these is as simple as flat narrow slightly heavy gage sheet
metal, some hole drilling and bending. ?if you have the tools, should take
about 5-10 minutes to make. ? ?for simplicity a two holes in the fender
matched to two holes in your bracket, loop a zip tie through. ?smooth sharp
edges or it will cut through tie sooner or later. ?
mine is "quick release" allowing high quality full protection fender on or
off in about 15 seconds, (if you leave the bracket on). ? ?(1/4 inch bolt
with wing nut. ). ?The bracket is hardware from a blackburn rack mount..?

Since we're on that subject, have any of you had good luck with painting
fenders? I ask because I have a set of fenders that are in good condition
but I don't like the color. I am thinking about spray painting them but I
envision the paint flaking off. I suppose I could talk to the sales rep at
the paint store for advice on prep but I figured that I would bug you all
first.

Thanks.

The flexible paint used on Lexan might work - Hobby stores sell it
for the Lexan bodies on R/C cars. They sell it in small quantities
though, so it might be spendy. Whatever paint you use, the prep work
is crucial to it sticking.

That particular bracket is weak due to the slot that runs down the
middle of it.
I used to have Bike Gallery do those type of brackets for me, back when
I didn't have a cx bike as my rain bike, and they would always break. I
actually thought River City made a better bracket that was solid as
compared to that slotted one.

Hello all,
I'm posting this because this thread comes up fairly often.
There's a dry cleaners by my house that does very good clothing/zipper
repair that is quite cheap (compared to the place that people love to
talk about on this list mtn something...???).
The name of the cleaners is Harmony Cleaners. It's located at the corner
of Harmony Rd and Linwood Ave next to the 711.

He's replaced two zippers for me, one in my team vest ($23 bucks), and
one in my team winter jacket ($24 bucks) as compared to that brand X
place which charges about $65 bucks for like repairs. Turn around on
these two items was about two days compared to about two weeks at brand
X mtn whatever.
Both zippers are quite heavy dute looking and they match my kit. He's
also repaired a knee warmer for me that I snagged on my rear fender flap
and ripped. Good solid work.

Steve

I think Krylon makes a "plastic primer" which I've had pretty good
luck with on other plastics. You can paint over it in other colors.
Not sure how well it would stand up to all the vibration of fenders,
but it works fine on lawn chairs. Lowes and Home Depot should have
it.

Thanks.

Josh

After some presidents' day mix ups the Echo Red to Red online registration
is back online and open untill the 21st. That means you have 5 days to

?

Please if you have any information or can keep an eye out for it, I thank
you very much in advance.

Last October I was at the Oregon Manifest and I talked with a guy who was

makes it easier to intall fenders on bikes with little frame clearance. I
should have bought one on the spot but didn't.

So, what I am asking now is, how can I obtain one of these? Where? How
much are they?

The flexible paint used on Lexan might work - Hobby stores sell it
for the Lexan bodies on R/C cars. They sell it in small quantities
though, so it might be spendy. Whatever paint you use, the prep work
is crucial to it sticking.

Last October I was at the Oregon Manifest and I talked with a guy who was
selling a product called a reach around.? This product is a bracket that
makes it easier to?intall fenders on bikes with little frame clearance.? I
should have bought one on the spot but didn't.??
?
So,?what I am asking now is, how can I obtain one?of these?? Where?? How
much are they???
?
Thanks.?

That particular bracket is weak due to the slot that runs down the
middle of it.
I used to have Bike Gallery do those type of brackets for me, back when
I didn't have a cx bike as my rain bike, and they would always break. I
actually thought River City made a better bracket that was solid as
compared to that slotted one.

I've had two of these brackets break due to vibrations from riding

Hello all,
I'm posting this because this thread comes up fairly often.

Lowes and Home Depot should have
it.
