Anyone else in OBRALand a recent victim of VISA fraud?

I got the same notification from my credit union. They reissued me a
new credit card but not before I noticed that my number had been used
at a Mexican restaurant in Chandler, AZ (just south of Phoenix, I love
google) in January. That's funny because I have never been to
Chandler, AZ let alone eat at a Mexican restaurant there. My credit
union took care of it.

It seems there may be a national fraud ring going on where someone
that hacks into a system, then sells the names & numbers in lots.
This way the criminal buyer can use one name & number in one place,
and another one in another place without charging too much on one card
raising a red flag to the owner of the card.

Check your back credit card statements and if you find a fraudulent
charge (it should stand out) your bank should take care of it. They
have insurance for that.

Because of all this ruckus, my new strategy for using my credit card online
is to use a service that Citibank offers that assigns a "dummy" or "virtual"
card number to a specific vendor. It will stay active for, at most, two
months and can only be used at that vendor. It'll automatically be declined
if someone attempts to use it elsewhere. I'm not sure what other banks/card
issuers offer this, but it's seems like a good idea if you can do it.

Me too--a Visa, but not a check card. US Bank called me with the suspicion that someone else was using it.

They got me. Bank of America caught it though and sent me an e-mail. I wasn't liable for the charges.

I'll add another data point. My MasterCard was compromised last week. Got
a call from the bank and closed the account.
Apparently, in addition to the Heartland Payment Systems incident in
January, a new one affecting an internet CC processor has been uncovered.
Here's an article:
http://www.scmagazineus.com/Visa-confirms-another-payment-processor-breach/article/127725/

Because it processes CC's on the internet, it's probably why a lot of OBRA
members are being hit. Most of you all are probably like me and buy quite a
lot of stuff online.

The major leak of information and reason many of us are being reissued cards from our CC companies, banks, credit union is Heartlands recent leak. Heartland is the 6th largest credit card/check clearing company out there. Many small businesses use Heartland. You may never have any fraudulant activity on your card but if it was used on a Heartland machine your info could be out there.

You can request that your financial institute reissue you a new card with a new # make sure they don't just send you the same card. You can also just be very vigilant and monitor all transactions on your accounts, though having dealt with lots of these cases its a pain in the butt to go through the steps to combat fraudulent charges. You also then have to go through canceling that account anyway.

It is also a good idea to have some sort of credit monitoring going on. You generally have to pay $10-20 a month for this service but you will be notified right away of any activity on your credit, much quicker alert to you versus stumbling upon it later. The big 3 Equifax, Transunion, Experian all offer this service as well as most banks and CC companies.

Thanks for the info Kenji.

I guess it's somewhat reassuring to know it's not just 'us' hopefully this
brought the issue to light and others are watching their accounts closely
until this blows by us, if it just blows by. I'm hoping this doesn't become
the 'norm' what a pain, I thought about getting a new VISA issued once a
year or so just to get my old number out of circulation.

For those that are curious I've got around 20 emails from people in the last
30 minutes that have had this happen to them very recently.

It's pretty widespread across the US- and it's not limited to VISA.
Something major was compromised. (My MC is being reissued because of
the exact same issue). There's a lot of traffic on some of bike
related forums about the issue too. I made a call to to my cc company
and they said that they had received word from a vendor/processor
about a security breach. They wouldn't elaborate beyond that.

While I'm not one to conjecture- it may be a processor that was
compromised.

I also got a replacement card from my bank, Bank of America. I did not see any activity on there that indicated fraudulent charges but did confirm with my bank that they were the ones who sent me the card.

I got hit twice in one week recently... a MasterCard debit card, and a Visa credit card. First time victim. I had to put both accounts on hold for a week. That caused several automatic drafts to bounce.

hmmmmm... this is not VISA related, but I saw some PayPal charges made
that will default to my VISA card if the balance is not sufficient to
cover things.

Could be related...
