Not the first OBRA race I have seen cancelled due to weather, but then I
have been around a lot longer than Joe. I even recall a PIR cancelled due
to weather.

Okay... this must be the first OBRA race I have ever seen canceled due to
weather. Not even the State Championships held in Madras (despite the
humungous rainstorm the night before) with mud all over the road and water
1-2 inches deep in spots resulted in a cancellation.

That being said, I think that discretion is the better part of valor.

Wow, that was a beautiful drive to Hagg Lake. We were almost there
driving through sunshine with some snow on the ground when we saw cars with bikes on driving towards us. After two cars gave
us the thumbs down sign it started to snow quite heavily. In just a
short distance it got much worse. We turned around and headed home.

The teenager got to drive on the way back (once we were out of the
snow) and we got donuts on the way home. Now the little one is napping
and we are cleaning house.

I hate to see a race canceled but it
was the best call. It is a tough decision I have been in that position
with Beautiful Estacada Time Trial. We looked at the whole course
checked the bridges for ice. We decided based on the road conditions,
wet but no ice or snow, that it was safe to race. Our turnout was low
but we had fun and in a couple of hours all the snow was gone.

Rick J: "I suspect someone was more concerned about a disappointing turnout."

Wow... Very inappropriate comment.

-Jeff M. puts on a great event and I trust any and all of the OBRA organizers/officials to keep us safe out there. If they decide to cancel because of safety concerns, so be it... we can race again next weekend. We have had enough bad accidents over the years- even without increases the chances 10 fold due to bad conditions.

i was there at 7:40 and it was snowing like crazy and the road were dangerous in your can let alone on a bike. i think it was the right decision, and i drove all the way from eugene. there was no way you could have safely held a race out there today.

What a bunch of wimps! That is so little snow it's pathetic. Your
average Californian could even ride in it.
Riders from the OTP area (Other Than Portland) have been riding worse
than that all winter.

I suspect someone was more concerned about a disappointing turnout.

And here's why: Snow! (7:30am, photo taken at the starting line turnout)

Apparently if the road isn't clear 2 hours before the race the officials
will cancel it.
