As a rider, Russell amazed me in the 70's and 80's...he frequently
soloed off the front in long road races, and you wouldn't see him
for...well, quite a while! Maybe not until after the race was over!

And now, as writer, he is a source of Oregon cycling insight, both past
and present (although, I must admit that his depiction of my '74 Mt
Tabor win made me look slightly more organized than I was... It's true,
great Canadian talent was there, but they simply mistook my habitual
rolling off the front in a 'Bill Hawley' tuck and always getting
re-absorbed for a little different style on the last two laps ...well, I
guess I did have to mettle the pedal, come to think of it!). I was so
green!
