Fellow Citzens of OBRA,
Just a quick note to let you know that we will have packet pickup available for the Cherry Blossom Cycling Classic on Thursday evening April 2nd from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Hood River Port Crit race site. I encourage all of you to come pick up your packet the night before to reduce the stress race morning but more importantly come out and race the Hood River Port Crit. A great course and a great organizer should make it a fun evening. For more info on the crit go to http://www.obra.org/flyers/2009/port_of_hood_river.html
If you are planning to attend book your lodging now. Rooms are filling up fast and any rooms at our host hotels that are not taken by the first of next week will be let go to the general public. We currently have a number of rooms blocked for race competitors so when you call Comfort Inn or Cousins Inn make sure and let them know you are coming in for the race. Plus you get a discounted rate as well and a portion of the room sales goes back to the race. If you want the race to continue then help support it through lodging with these establishments. For more information go to our lodging page on the web at http://www.cherryblossomclassic.com/lodging/ Results will be posted at both of these hotels first every night then online later that evening (when I actually sit down in my office).
Be sure to get your registration in now to avoid late fees. The city of The Dalles is psyched and it is going to be a tremendous event. We hope to see all of you at the starting line!
Sincerely,
Chad

I've got a lightly used XL Salsa Primero Frameset for sale. It is a 53cm
(XL - 60cm equivalent) Red frame. It is made from S3 steel - which rides
AWESOME - and it comes with an Alpha Q carbon fork. Here are the geometry
specs - http://www.salsacycles.com/archive/primero.html . I think the
effective TT is 59cm.
I think the frame weighs about 3lbs and 3 or 4 oz.
Frame is in great shape - 2 yrs old, but only a couple thousand miles. I
don't ride as much as I like to think I do, and I ride my Moots road bike
more, as well as my MTB. Never raced or crashed. Steerer is uncut.
Frameset originally sold for $1450. I'd like to get $750. For $900 I'll
throw in a silver King HS and Thomson stem and post. Another $450 gets the
Campy Record Crank I just put on less than 300miles ago.

If you've got a pair of cycling shoes with the old Boa Lacing Tensylon cord (from back in 2005 or so) and afraid it's gonna snap because it is frayed, I've got a brand new (unopened) Model B parts kit for it.
Check the www.boatechnology.com website to make certain it will be compatible.
The kit includes:
>2 new reels (left/right)
>lacing tool
>new wire/steel cable (cut to fit)
>instructions
>internal hardware for the reels
I'm asking $10.

Please see the info below about the West Side Omnium in Washington on May 2-3, 2009.? These are two good road race courses, and the prize list?offers CAT 1 Men and CAT 1/2 Women a chance to qualify for the Nature Valley Grand Prix in mid-June, among other things.? You can do both races or just one.? See the blog listed below for more details.? Contact info listed at the bottom of this message (that means please don't send your questions to me!).? -Martha

Subject: West Side Omnium info.

As you may (or may not) know, the Glenwood RR and the Longbranch Classic RR have combined forces in 2009 to offer the West Side Omnium.? While each race is independent of one another for race management purposes we are collaborating very carefully to ensure a seamless event for all involved.
?
Our race flyer is finally in the hands of the USAC Chief Referee and we anticipate release of that and further details to be approved shortly. For now limited information is available online at http://WestSideO.blogspot.com.
?
Online registration registration will be handled by Sports Base Online and I fully expect some fields to fill before day of race (especially CAT 5 Men & CAT 4 Women with USAC limits of 50 racers); so plan ahead.??I?fully expect this?to open?next week.? You will see a logo and link at the above blogspot page when online registration is open.?
?
Host hotel will be the Day's Inn near Port Orchard (360-895-7818), with an online link at the above blogspot.? They have set aside 20 rooms for our race until April 17th.? Mention the "Old Town Bicycle bike race discount" for $78 for a single?& $83 for a double.? We?will also have virtually unlimited parking possibilities at the Longbranch Improvement Club parking lot for those bring a sleeper van, RV, or who wish to camp on Saturday night.
?
The weekend of racing will have a lot to offer - WA State Senior Championship status, BARR points, WA Cup points, and for CAT 1 Men and CAT 1/2 Women a chance to qualify for the Nature Valley Grand Prix in mid-June.?
?
Total Prize list will be both for individual races and the omnium - weighted toward those who accumulate the most omnium points and worth approximately $6000 (cash & merchandise - mostly cash).? Prizes will go 3-10 deep depending on category. Stay tuned for details.
?
Any questions please review the blogspot page and then either contact me or Tom Hackleman for further info.

More random musings:
Has anyone studied bone density loss in bicyclists in terms of free radical generation? I remember Dr Ralph Yates' article on his bone density loss due to overtraining. If anyone overtrains, it has to be Tour-level pros. It would seem "obvious" that putting in hundreds of miles a week is going to have "side effects" of some sort.
Anyone have any data or pointers thereto on this?

More importantly, what should we be doing to prevent it? Besides lots
of green, leafy veggies, of course...

Weight bearing exercises:
Running
Weight lifting
Soccer
The above sports are weight-bearing sports that help to build bone
density and muscle mass.

Your bones, like all structures in the body, are dynamic. They respond to the conditions placed on them, and adapt accordingly. Bone density loss occurs in the general population when there is not adequate stress on the musculoskeletal system. There are also nutritional (e.g. Vitamin D deficiency) and disease states that contribute to bone density loss.
The stresses that most effectively maintain bone density are compressive and bending forces, though torsional forces can also contribute. Any activity that provides these types of forces of adequate magnitude will maintain bone density.
There are different types of bone in the body. Your femur, for example, is primarily cortical (compact) bone. This type of bone does not respond as quickly to loading (or lack of loading) as the other type of bone, which is cancellous (spongy) bone...found in places like the spine.
If you want to maintain your bone mass, you must have weight-bearing of adequate magnitude in the upper and lower body. Running etc would be good for leg bone mass, but does not help spinal bone mass. For that, you would have to do something like strength training.
Shameless plug - we offer Kettlebell classes at HPChiro that can help you maintain your bone mass and build strength and endurance. Kettlebells are an excellent way to strengthen your core and make you a "complete" athlete rather than just all heart lungs and legs.
Back to bone density (mass). Peak bone mass is built by your 20s. After that it is largely a race to stop bone loss as it is generally accepted that you can't exceed the peak bone mass that you built by your 20s. If you are over 30, that makes it even more important to maintain.
Bottom line - like most everything else in your body, use it or lose it. If you do not do dynamic weight bearing activity of a certain magnitude, your bone mass will gradually decline making you more susceptible to fractures. The most effective way to add dynamic and adequate-magnitude forces to your bone structure is strength training.

$200 or best offer - never used Mavic Aksium Race wheelset.
Intended on using them for 'cross last season, but didn't have a bike to put
them on. Need to sell some stuff to fund a trip.
