Fischer, Jim E (Corvallis)
Jeff,
Thanks for the kudos.
Seth and I went through the evals on the way south on Saturday, and we had lots of feedback requesting a field session for more hands-on practice. This is normally what we do with the course, but neither Seth nor I are familiar enough with the Portland area to have set that up.
The training in Corvallis includes working outside for a few hours scoring and ref'ing a mock race.
In the future, we could do something similar in the Portland if we had some local help figuring out where to do that.
However, your best bet now is to do as Jeff suggests, and jump in and start swimming by volunteering at any and all local events in whatever capacity floats your boat...or turns your crank, as the case may be.
See you at the races!
Fish

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Officials Clinic - Great Job!
I attended the Officials Clinic in Portland this weekend and I wanted to share what a great job Jim and Seth did. We can't race without officials and we have seen some amazing steps in the training of new officials. Kudos to those guys for the work they do (and thanks to all the officials who work day-in and day-out).
If you're newly trained or want to know more about officiating, the easiest thing to do is to volunteer to help the judges (even for part of the day) or ask to hop in a car to watch some on the road refereeing. Check with the promoter and the Chief official and I'm sure they'd be glad to use you.
Once again, great job!
Jeff
