Safe Bike Route to the Coast

Has anyone ridden from Hwy 26/Spruce Run Park and then down the Nehalem and
cut south to Garibaldi? Is it still Gravel in the middle section? I
haven't been there in along time.

Thanks,

Brian

There are lots of great routes to the coast, but Hwy 26 is definitely not
one of them. I've ridden it with a trailer and won't ever do it again. If
you're open to areas other than Cannon Beach, here are a few alternatives
that get you to the same general area. I can't take credit for most of these
-- I discovered them through the Oregon Randonneurs.

* Highway 6 to Tillamook. IMO this is more scenic than 26, there's much less
traffic, and a better shoulder most of the way.

* Nestucca River Road. Finding this on a map is tricky, but it's a gorgeous
ride, so long as it's not closed for construction (as a later post implies).
There are several campgrounds along the way:

* Alternately, cut off on Bible Creek, and go via Willamina/Grand Ronde/Hwy
22. A longer ride, hilly and rugged. You can also turn left on Little
Nestucca River Rd.
http://tinyurl.com/dec5th

* Highway 202 to Astoria:
http://tinyurl.com/cxezqk

* Highway 202 to 26, then 53 to Nehalem (you're on 26 for about 10 miles,
but it's one of the better sections):
http://tinyurl.com/d6xqnm

* Highway 229/180
http://tinyurl.com/cvqc63

Anyone of these will offer less traffic than Highway 26, with opportunities
to camp along the way.

There is also a very nice route to the coast on Meadow Lake Road starting
from Carlton, OR. This road winds up to a Haskins Creek reservoir and then
descends along the Neskowin River to the small town of Hebo. The last time I
did it, it had a short stretch of gravel, but easy to do on normal road
tires.

Hebo is a little South of Tillamook, so not exactly near Canon Beach, but it
is a beautifully serene route with very little traffic. Hope that helps.

I was planning on riding towards Cannon Beach during Spring Break and
doing some camping...even in the rain.

I'll be towing a Burley kids trailer with my gear in it.

All I can think of is taking Hwy 26 the whole way. How dangerous is
this for those of you who have done it before?

Any alternate routes worth mentioning?

Any alternate destinations that might be better?

Thanks.

I did this ride in October. A federal highway crew was out there widening the road so big trucks could travel it more frequently. Oh - and the construction worker said the improvements would allow for it to be classified as "wild & scenic."

Anyways, they had torn up at least 10 miles of road, and they wouldn't let me bike it. I had to wait half an hour for the "guide truck" to come back (it had just left for the other end of the construction zone), and then they threw my bike in the back and I got a bumpy lift. It's a good thing they hadn't let me press on - most of the road was unrideable.

Might want to check on their progress if you decide to go that way. If it's fixed, it's gorgeous - some of the prettiest stands of birch you'll ever see.

Thanks Ron for the clarification, yes it is the Nestucca and the ride hits 101 in Beaver, not Hebo. I did say it has been a while since I did this route didn't I? :)

Chris

Chris, Will, all,
The other route that is a nice route and will land you close to Seaside is
the road out of Scappoose out to Jewell/ Mist/Birkenfield and off toward
Astoria... then hang a left at the bridge before you get to the highway (I
think it is the Young's River Rd.) I think this is the same route the Hood
to Coast runners use for their event. It is a hilly, but nice ride. I have
done the ride into Astoria, but not the Young's cut off... but it is
probably beautiful. I think Chris meant the Nestucca (not Neskowin) river.
That is a nice ride. Most people using it are not in a hurry but it is
pretty far south of Seaside. When it comes to tourning, so many decisions
are based on how much time one has to travel. There are some very nice
routes to the coast other than main highways. Wet major highways can be
very negative experiences.

That is a great route, very little traffic. It actually puts you on 101 in Beaver. If your plan is to camp at the coast, that's only 15 miles from Cape Lookout state park. Have a good ride!
