These are all good ideas. We want to eliminate all risk if possible. I do believe that on bikes for the velodrome you could have just one of those training wheel look-a-like attachments on the inside to keep the weight down on those high performance machines. Helmet air bags are good. Curb feelers a safe bet. I really am not going to worry about the derailleur in the spokes as I expect next years bikes to have disk wheels eliminating the those dangerous spokes. They have always been an issue with cyclists. They break and bend so easily. Danger lurks everywhere. We in "Risk Management" are here to make your life not just more safe.... but more fulfilling. We are working with major manufacturing companies of the various materials used in bicycle frames. Our common goal is to have all framebuilding materials be fully reflective at night as another step forward in making life safe here on planet earth.

It would look something like this "safety motorcycle" that was actually prototyped by the government in the 1970's.
I attached a picture because some people might think I'm joking...

It seems to me bicycles should have seat belts and roll bars as standard equipment. They should be welded onto the frames so those elitest racer types could not remove them. These type seem to think they are immune to cycling accidents and do not need these wonderful safety upgrades to these inherently dangerous vehicles. :-)

?
That's pretty funny George, I bet you are on your way home right now to install a new pie plate on all your bikes so you don't have a fall Hazard during your rides...Watch out for those Big Blue 55 gallon drums at PIR though, they jump out in front of you....Remember?

yes, it is for lacking the all important pie plate on the rear wheel. Everyone knows how dangerous that can be. It is one of the factors that makes bike racing so dangerous in that no one has pie plates on their rear wheels.

Just saw this and thought I would pass it along.
Cannondale Recalls Some 2009 Road Bikes
WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN)The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Cannondale, has issued a voluntary recall of roughly 1,300 road bicycles from the 2009 model year.
The bicycles fail to meet the federal safety standard for bicycles. Spoke protector discs, required on bicycles to prevent the bicycle chain from interfering or suddenly stopping the wheel, are missing from these bicycles, which poses a fall hazard to the rider.
The following Cannondale bicycles are included in the recall. "Six" is printed on the bicycle's toptube and "Cannondale" is printed on the downtube. The models include: Six 5 (9RCT5D); Six 5 Compact (9RCT5C); Six 6 (9RCT6D); Six 6 Triple (9RCT6T); Six Carbon 5 (9RSX5D); Six Carbon 5 Compact (9RSX5C); and Six Carbon 6 Compact (9RSX6C).
These bikes were sold at authorized Cannondale dealers nationwide from October 2008 through February 2009 for between $1,500 and $2,100. They were manufactured in Taiwan.
Consumers should stop using the recalled bicycles immediately and contact any authorized Cannondale bicycle dealer for a free repair.
Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Cannondale at (800) 245-3872 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (EST) Monday through Friday or visit Cannondale's Web site at www.cannondale.com.
