post ride recovery drink

I just use the same protein powder I use after rock climbing. MetRX Protein
Plus. As with all protein powders, it is unlikely you can adequately
metabolize all of the protein in a recommended serving. I also like the
IsoPure Protein by Nature's Best. Mixes easily and has worked well after
hard aerobic activity.

I like the Hammer products also. I mix perpetuem(carbs) with Hammer whey protein. Sometimes I mix fiber in as well. You could also mix heed(carbs) with whey protein. You could get real fancy and throw all that in a blender with fruit, I've never done that but I bet it's good. The fruit could be the carbs. If it is not sweet enough add stevia like Hammer does. I don't like the xylitol sweetener that Hammer uses.
You could make you own stuff. Get protein from the bulk bin at your local natural food store and mix it with some sort of carbs.Try too make the carbs complex like Hammer does. Probably the same carbs you use when you ride.
I would not worry about the amounts too much. If you put too much of this or that in, it can't be as bad as over-indulging in a pack of cookies or whatever.
The main thing is for it too taste good so you look forward to it.
Understand these are all calories and you need to lower your meal intake if you don't want to gain weight.
So I only use recovery drinks after real intense rides. On light days I may not even put carbs in my drink during rides.
I am sure chocolate milk is OK in a pinch.
Real food and water is probably the best, but this is something convenient to take right away.

Hi Trevor!

I've tried a bunch of different things-- Accelerade, Endurox R4,
water, various Gatorades, Shots, Gu's. I had all sorts of problems--
cramping, gas, nausea, brightly colored pee...

Last year I was turned onto Hammer products. I use the gels,
Endurolytes (pills and powder) and HEED (powdered drink mix).

In the past I used to suffer from debilitating leg cramps near the
end of a ride -- especially over two hours -- and would continue post-
ride. I've found the Endurolytes to be very effective for preventing
muscle cramps and HEED to be very good for any rides and races (it
has a mix of carbs and electrolytes) over an hour or so. The larger
tubs of power are the most economical-- you can also toss in a little
extra powdered Endurolytes if you find you need it.

The best thing about HEED is that is has a very light flavor-- it's
not gross and cloying like many other products.

Local distributor Jeff Tedder is also very knowledgeable and helpful.

Good luck!

Brian J.

Wow do you guys read ingredients in these products? And where does it come from?
12 grams of carbs, 32 grams of Protein, it's backwards, you cannot even come close to absorbing that amount of protein after efforts...
Plus it's way low on carbs, it should be 3 - 1 carbs to protein...
Plus it's full of Sodium, 580 MG, and lots of simple sugar, no wonder it tastes good...And has NO Glutamine....
Just my 2 cents but I am somewhat bias : ) When your ready to come to the darkside let me know...HAH

I actually really like the Cytomax Recovery drink. It's great tasting and works well. I hear they will be discontinuing it however so if you like it, you might want to stock up on it. They have enough on hand to make it through the season from what I hear. I'm not sure if they will be replacing it with another product or not.

Cytomax did stop putting recovery lable on the Muscle Milk. It is the samething. They felt endurance atheletes wouldn't use muscle milk. So they put Recovery on it. Now that we will use it they stopped using the recovery lable. This was what Frank P at Cytomax told me. So use the Muscle Milk.

I actually really like the Cytomax Recovery drink. It's great tasting and works well. I hear they will be discontinuing it however so if you like it, you might want to stock up on it. They have enough on hand to make it through the season from what I hear. I'm not sure if they will be replacing it with another product or not.

Trevor,

I can vouch for Jeff - great products (Hammer Nutrition) and great customer service. - and it's made in USA, not Taiwan! ;-)
