Hi,
I know the cancellation of the Tour of Willamette is a disappointment for all of us, but do not despair. There is still a race on the calendar that will challenge your body and lift your spirits: The Elkhorn Classic Stage Race. This three day, four stage timed event will be held in Baker City, Oregon June 7th, 8th and 9th, 2002. Categories offered: Men Pro 1/2, Men 3/4, Men Masters 40+, and One Women's field open to all that want to race. ALL CATEGORIES RIDE THE SAME COURSES.
The first race, Oregon Trail Road Race is approximately 85 miles with 4,200' of climbing on a beautiful scenic loop that crosses many points of the original Oregon Trail. The first group will start Friday at 2:00 PM leaving ample time to drive over on Friday morning. The next morning will be a 10 mile ITT to the base of the Blue Mountains on an out and back course. This will be followed by the afternoon downtown Gold Rush Criterium. There is a guaranteed $1,000 cash in primes up for grabs on the flat wide streets of historic Baker City. You'll want to save a little as Sunday morning is the signature race: The Elkhorn Road Race. This epic 100 mile loop crosses the Elkhorn ridge of the Blue Mountains not once but twice. It is an Oregon scenic byway, travels through farms, ghost towns, a ski area, and has about 8,000' of climbing. This is definitely a stage that could rearrange the GC.
The Elkhorn Classic Stage Race is a 100% payout event. There will be medals awarded to the top three finishers of each stage in each category. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category for the GC.
Entry fees are discounted if postmarked before May 12th and be sure to look into the team discount option with four or more riders. There are no registration opportunities after June 4th and field sizes will be limited to 100 riders in each field. All registration details are available on the web page. Also, look for a flyer coming soon.
Lodging has been arranged at the host hotel, The Sunridge Inn, or at the modern High School for $5.00 per night per person. Baker City has all the amenities and is excited to showcase the city and surrounding country to our peleton. There will be a lot of riders coming from Idaho, Montana, and Washington, so bring your "A" game to show the Northwest how strong we can ride.
