I think the point is that if we all take care of our own stuff, we won't
have to burden already over-stretched volunteers with it! I don't see
why a few volunteers should be expected to bear the burden. I'm afraid
asking for that is like giving license to litter because "there are
always the volunteers to clean it up".
Why not ask all racers to sweep the course on their cool-down and pick
up trash?

Indeed some great points and help on a serious issue. Given that several
races have been cancelled or are looking for race promoters to pick up
the torch, I'd like to use an example of a possible upcoming race.....
(Though a little long-winded for an OBRA chat email, I feel compelled as
a potential race promoter that I should convey my own experience with
this)
I am currently leading a team of fellow racers to bring back the Larch
Mountain Hillclimb (The perfect Father's Day gift for your family racer
on June 16th!) and one of the very first questions from just about every
person at a community meeting was what kind of mess 1000 'bicycle
people' will leave.
Explaining the difference between a 'fun-walk-run-ride-tour-gala event
for weekend warriors' -- who are seen as having no ettiquette, safety or
environmental concern -- and exerienced racers was well received in part
because several community members are aware of OBRA and it's history and
feel experienced racers are more knowledgeable and respectful. HOWEVER,
Larch Mtn has been missing for several years and several community
members are reluctant to approve this. While it does appear that we will
gain support from the neighborhood groups -for this year- when seeking
our ODOT and County permits, it will only take one or two incidents to
cause Larch Mtn to become a one-time event. Anyone remember the trouble
at the District TT last year? It's not just litter. Rules of the road,
and community interaction are also part of it.
Also, don't forget to thank everyone you see including our officials,
corner marshalls who protect us, people on the roads even other racers
just for showing up to try to beat me. A big thanks to Jeff Mitchem and
his BB Co. for a job well done. So far so good, and another week still
ahead. :)

If your jersey isn't baggy, try tucking the used wrapping/empty gel pack
up under the hem in front. I have good success in not dropping my
garbage (or having to try and stuff it into my rear pockets) this way.
Especially good for cold, numble-fingered days like yesterday!
Dan, thanks for speaking up on this issue...peer pressure against
littering is a bit tough, especially when it might be some really cool,
strong rider that tosses garbage off, but littering is really yucky and
should be seen that way!
