Some positive comments on a bike race
This past weekend, "RAO George and Terri" put on an excellent two day
event (three-race TT "stage race") out of Maupin, Or.
Saturday was windy, yes. Very gusty and changeable, making it difficult
to ride a smooth TT in the morning. It was also exciting(and a bit
unpleasant) coming down off the second race course (a pure uphill TT) on
Saturday afternoon. I saw a few people walking their bikes downhill and one
guy took a slight wind-assisted trip into the ditch..unhurt..during the
descent. I felt a bit sorry for a few of the Tri-guys I saw descending in
sleeveless skinsuits...brrrr! But everyone took the springtime conditions
in stride, I guess. I saw wry grins and some amazed headshaking but heard no
whining when I finally reached the shelter of Maupin, down in the river
bottom.
Sunday, they advanced the first rider time to 8am to try to avoid the
winds..This, plus a nicer day, made for much better conditions on the longer
(46 mile) out and back course. A fine awards ceremony, with plenty of swag
for all, followed shortly after the last finisher crossed the line..Quick
results work and nicely done. Thanks to all the sponsors, too.
The courses were well staffed with cheerful volunteers who braved the
blustery and cold conditons all day Saturday, dressed in down parkas and
still freezing, I imagine. Sunday was much nicer for the workers, but the
hay fields were still coated with ice as I drove in through Tygh Valley for
the early start. Thank you, Maupin Volunteers and great job, Terri and
George!
Also, all you racers..you (we?) did good, too. Tough stuff, a 46 mile up
3000'+ Time trial as the final race ...
