The law used ban bicycles from sidewalks and crosswalks. It was changed a few years back. The kicker is that the bicyclist must go no faster than "walking speed." This is a nice little loophole for motorists who can say "He just came out of nowhere and was going too fast for me to stop."
The fundamental fact of life is that the laws of physics are always in effect.

I think it is also not the legal thing to do, to ride on the sidewalk.
I recall some discussion of this a year or two ago. By law, I
understood from those discussions, that we are suppose to ride on the road.
I have ridden on the side walk and it feels very unsafe to me. It is
very narrow. I take the road. It's a short bridge. We have a right to
be there.

I say its irresponsible to ride on the 20" sidewalk.

There is definitely not enough room to accommodate a 20 mph cyclist on the bridge, especially sense cars are going 35+ mph over that bridge. And there is definitely not enough room to pass a cyclist comfortably on the road. I have always crossed the bridge on the sidewalk and have never had a problem, and it really isn't that difficult to go slow on the sidewalk and stop and let others pass. just be safe. I don't think it is necessary to walk your bike across the bridge though.
