RE: MTB: Self Promotion: A challenge

Shane Young

2002-03-13

Wade, I was in the same boat. Grew up in Northern California, where

some long time classic races are held, and never heard a word about them

until I moved to Oregon. I have friends that have heard more about

Oregon racing in other states than in Oregon. There is something

defiantly wrong with that. If I only would have known, I would have

started racing at 16 instead of 26. :)

Have any of the series sponsors ever produced a poster advertising the

season series?   I rode mt bikes for years and never even realized

racing existed in Oregon until I happened to go riding on a trail that

had hosted a race just days before.   Some of the course markers (little

flags with the "GT" logo on them) were left behind and that got me

asking questions and searching the web.   Had my local LBS prominently

displayed a nice color poster advertising Oregon racing I might have

started racing a couple of years earlier - and how many potential racers

out there never run across something like I did?   Just food for

thought...

By the way, the trail was in the Mac Forest and the race was the

Mudslinger. :-)

Shane has some great ideas for targeting new markets, however to really

break through and get noticed race organizers will need to have media

partners and develop relationships with feature editors and story

editors in Print and Broadcast media. This takes knowledge in those

areas. However, some of this can be done very easily which most race

organizers don't do is try to gain publicity for their event(aka free

press). This can be done by writing press releases, story leads and

overview of the event and sending it to the media lists we have. Then

following up on it and seeing if some publicity can be gained.

Another issues is about flyers. A group of race organizers just recently

cordinated our efforts to share the labor and costs of a mass mailling

to current OBRA database (900pieces) and the final breakdown and cost of

the mailing came to $62.00 for each organzier. Thats very doable for

most races.

If your into organizing races, you should look how arts organizations do

all this stuff(re:marketing) on limited funds and they still make

budget. Just a thought!

Last year finding out information about XC races sometimes seemed like

searching for a needle in a hay stack. Some promoters were very good

and others were not so good.   I understand that every one is busy and

sometimes getting the word out seems to be the last thing or people

assume that the website is enough.   Plus, promoters are trying to

keep cost down so the advertising budget is usually the first to be

cut. As part of the OBRA mailing list we are some of the most

informed riders, but people that dont currently belong to OBRA, for

the most part have no way to find out about races.

So I propose a challenge to all racers one that will promote racing in

the state and hopefully increase the amount of people racing.   We

will or have all ready received fliers for the Mudslinger and will be

receiving fliers for other races in the mail.   Take these fliers and

make 10 copies, which should cost no more than $2.00. Post these

copies at your local bike shops and other place where interested

people will see them. Dont just post the local races, but all races

in the state. If everyone were able to do this, I think we would see

a difference in participation.
