A friend at work's husband is planning on racing the Xterra triathalon this summer, and needs a MTB. His dream bike would be a 19inch or 21 inch 29er with a suspension fork and gears. He's like to spend under $500. Anyone got a bike that fits the bill? If not, any non-29ers, or 29ers with SS set up, or rigid set-up for cheap?

As another option, he is thinking about putting a suspension fork on his 1986 Miata Path bike with biopace rings and just using that. I assume this has a 1" head tube. Does anyone want to sell an old suspension fork that would fit the Miata bike?
