Proposed OBRA Rule Change - May 27th, 2009

The new OBRA definition of youth racer has inadvertently affected
tandem races which have traditionally featured riders under 10 years
old as stokers. This change will allow tandem races to continue to
include stokers under 10 (with the permission of their parent or
guardian).

Please note that in the past these races have allowed youth stokers
and therefore we are not seeking to change the way these races are
run, but to allow them to continue to run as they have in the past.
Also any promoter who wishes to exclude youth stokers on tandems in
their events may continue to do so by mentioning this on their race
flyer.

These are two rule changes, one under section 6.5 and the other under
7.3.1.2

7.3.1.2 Bicycles must be no more than 2 meters long and 75 cm wide.
Tandems may be up to 3 meters long. Tag-along style tandems may only
be used in time trials unless specifically agreed to by the OBRA
Executive Director and Chief Referee and clearly worded on the race
flyer.

6.5 – Age Graded Categories (Under youth)
Youth is defined as riders under the age of 10. Youth riders may enter
only youth races and may not be mixed with other categories except as
stokers on tandems at the discretion of the race promoter. The minimum
age of a youth stoker is a racing age of 4 years. Youth only races
must be held on closed courses.
