Have done the exact route below a couple of times on a Cross Bike. Hilltop road out of Harlan is a beautiful paved single lane logging road. Watch for occasional Moss on the pavement in the canopied sections. If you are familiar with Beaver Creek, that is mostly Gravel then I think you have it covered. The tricky part is the transition from Hilltop to Beaver Creek. Been lost there before.

Other alternatives from Corvallis are going up Woods Creek Road from HWY 20 just outside of Philomath [Gravel, then single track] to half way up Mary’s Peak, then taking the cut off down to Harlan [Gravel] from the paved road on Mary’s. Once in Harlan follow the route below.

Can anyone recommend a route from the Corvallis area to Newport? I want to avoid Hwy 20 and 34. According to a road sign on Hwy 20 at Burnt Woods there’s a road from there to the little town of Harlan. >From there to the summit of the coast range, Google maps shows a bunch of little twisty roads – has anyone ridden this area and do you have any tips for navigating the forks in the road? I’m familiar with the last stretch, which is Beaver Creek Rd to Ona Beach south of Newport. I understand there’s a lot of gravel road involved. Better that than the highways.

Any tips on this route, or other alternates?
