Below is FANTASTIC NEW INFORMATION for anyone (in NW Oregon/ SW Washington) who enjoys good off road riding. Some of you may know Ryan Kilgren as he races around at XC, Short Track and Cross races in his Blue Sky kit and long red hair. He is committed to helping us have great places to ride and the information below shows his and others hard work. This is not about what he or others have or will do....BUT MOST IMPORTANT it shows all of you with interest, where you can ride and if possible help out. Downhillers.... you will love the first part about Reheers! LEGAL DOWNHILL coming your way!!!! Unbelievable! There are great things happening in the off NW off-road riding world because of a huge injection of new energy.
Get out and ride before you lose your ability to balance.

Subject: [pumpclub] Tillamook State Forest Updates

It has been a big few weeks for mountain bike advocacy in the Tillamook State Forest.

TECHNICAL AND CHALLENGING MOUNTAIN BIKE OPPORTUNITIES
Last night two local downhill mountain bike racers, along with Ryan M. (Westside Trail Federation; WTF), Joe R. (WTF and Northwest Trail Alliance; NWTA), Wayne N. (NWTA), and myself (NWTA) met with Randy Peterson (Oregon Department of Forestry; ODF) to confirm the legalization and adoption of a formerly user created downhill trail near Reheers Camp. Additionally, we moved into discussions regarding the development of a network of technical and challenging mountain bike opportunities (including downhill trails, freeride trails, and skills development areas) within Mountain Bike Area 1. This meeting was an enormous success and has been long coming. WTF and NWTA have been representing the mountain bike community in regards to development of technical and challenging trails in the Tillamook State Forest for several years now. This spring we continued to advocate through meetings, phone calls, and emails. We are making significant progress and
look forward to the next steps towards initiating construction in spring 2010. We appreciate the support from the mountain bike community to date and anticipate good turnouts for successful build and maintenance days to create sustainable recreational infrastructure.

WILSON RIVER TRAIL SAGA - TRAIL CONSTRUCTION BEGINS
Efforts on the parts of ODF, Oregon Equestrian Trails (OET), and NWTA, additional grant funding and both monetray and labor donations were secured for the extension of the Wilson River Trail (Segment C-1) east from Elk Creek Campground to Idiot Creek Road. Grant funding was secured from Cycle Oregon and Bikes Belong to help provide match to a Recreational Trails Program (RTP) award. OET provided additional dollars, and NWTA has promised volunteer labor to complete this trail construction project. The contractor has begun construction on the trail and has made good headway. The crew is utilizing two custom trail machines, which under good conditions are capable of roughing in approximately 1,000 feet of new trail per day.

GALES CREEK TRAIL - SAGA CONTINUES
ODF is preparing a cost estimate to present to FEMA to show the difference between re-routing the trail and re-constructing the trail where it used to be (which is of course impossible considering the hillside does not exist anymore). This cost estimate will help facilitate funding from FEMA to move the reconstruction project forward. This is a long time coming (over two years now), and the mountain bike community is anxious to re-experience this beautiful trail. Thank you for your patience.

TRIPLE C TRAIL - GO RIDE IT
The Triple C Trail is one of the newest trail opportunities constructed through the volunteer work parties held by ODF. This trail is billed as a beginner to intermediate trail. It starts out of the Reheers Camp Day Use Trailhead, and is 2-3 miles in length. The trail passes large trees, and climbs through a twisty section of singletrack before descending through a thinned forest back to the trailhead. This trail could benefit from more use and is quite fun.

VOLUNTEER TRAIL PATROL
The Tillamook State Forest Volunteer Trail Patrol meeting for July is THIS Wednesday, July 8th. The meeting starts at 7pm at the ODF Forest Grove office (801 Gales Creek Road, Forest Grove, OR). Several mountain bikers have been participating in the ODF run program this year, and each participant serves to strengthen our representation and opportunities on the Tillamook State Forest - as well as providing assistance and education to other trail users which serves to further the positive promotion of mountain biking. Please consider attending this event. The topics of discussion will include basics of trail patrolling and radio use.

TOUR DE TILLAMOOK - ATTEND IT
The weekend long event is scheduled from Friday July 31st through Sunday August 2nd and staged out of the Smith Homestead (near the Tillamook Forestry Center on Highway 6 and with access to the Wilson River Trail). The event will feature the NWTA mobile skills park that Will et al. has constructed and showcased at the Sunday Parkways and Short Track Mountain Bike Race events. We will also have various group rides (all abilities), mountain bike films, instructed children's skills development, an on-site bike mechanic, presentation on basic bike maintenance, lunch/dinner included, custom NWTA water bottles for participants, challenge events, an instructed work party on the morning of Sunday August 2nd, camping (group site at Jones Creek Campground is reserved), and demo bikes. Registration information should be available on the website during the next few days. We are also seeking volunteer help for event setup (including mowing/brush
cutting/flagging the week before the event), lunch/dinner cooks/helpers, NWTA informational booth, event clean up, mountain bike film operators, group ride leaders/sweepers, challenge event officials, work party crew leaders, food item donator's, and more. Please contact me off list if you are interested in volunteering for a portion of the event or would like more information about the event/activities and/or volunteering.
