On the more hypocritical side of things....

Shooting ducks is done on private land too. Look at this commercial
non-farming enterprise that is run on Sauvie farmland.

Kris, OBRA,
Thanks for info. I (and I hope everyone else) stays positive and helps in
any manner that is agreed upon to give us our best shot at racing out there
(even though some of what I am going to say may seem negative). The very
first bike race I ever did was on that island 1979... Jack Frost Time Trial.

Did it get moved because not enough farm produce was sold to cyclists in
February? Maybe we should all sell our bikes, buy shotguns and go out for
the duck and goose season and make lots of noise hunting. Am I wrong in
thinking that does not change the "quiet rural" island environment? Hey
Ron! You don't sound very positive here. From my perspective, bike races,
weddings and such have less negative impact on that island than all that
shooting. I know the hunting takes place on state/federal land, but you can

hear it for miles. What Don is doing is bringing city folk out to hang out
and enjoy some time on the farm. It is not all asphalt and concrete. It
just seems hypocritical. I am done venting for now. Forgive me.

Kris, OBRA,
Thanks for info.

Forgive me.

Reposting here an update I just posted on BikePortland.org...

I got off the phone with Don Kruger and obviously, he is very pleased with the strong support he is receiving from the bike community (here and through email) and he told me they are looking at some other legal routes - outside the appeal process for the farm stand permit - to continue to host bike races at the farm.

One thing Don asked me to relay to everyone is for individuals to NOT file an appeal to this ruling, as it might interfere with the other route he and his lawyer are exploring. If in the end an appeal of the ruling turns out to be their best option, they will certainly do so.

As for the likelihood of any Kruger's races happening this year, it's really too early to call. Both Don and myself are committed to do whatever we can to make it happen. If any of you happen to have connections with Multnomah County (especially with the County Commissioners) that could help facilitate a solution for the upcoming races, please e-mail me off-list.

The world famous Roloff's of Helvetia in Washington County faced similar
bureaucratic obstacles, but they managed to overcome them to host corporate
picnics, etc., etc. So there seems to be a path around this, at least in
Washington County.
