Comcast and the TdF - no spoiler

I finally got to watch the whole stage on TV rather than online and Charter down here in Southern Oregon kept it commercial free for around the last 10k of the stage. Don't know by comparison if this is a daily thing though, but very nice for us!

Cheers!

But with the condensed version, you are stuck with Bob Roll.

I think this issue (poor commercial timing) is something that occurs at select
Comcast locales. Here in Vancouver, I have yet to see a problem with poor
commercial timing during the finishes.

No rogue ads in yesterdays broadcast and haven't seen any today - yet. Maybe
folks are calling and emailing with complaints. I know we have.

Sounds like the best answer is to skip the live version (where they
insert silly commercials) and instead watch the delayed re-broadcasts.
They're better anyway since they condense it down shorter -
especially for the longer mountain stages. Of course, they aren't
live though, and I assume they occasionally cut out some entertaining
video...

I lost versus when comcast removed it from the "limited basic" cable. :-(

Obviosly, people are not complaining about advertisements.  It is the way they are occurring, such as being randomly inserted over the broadcast without regard to the state of the event.

it is funny how we all complain now about the coverage. 8 or so years ago, pre OLN/VS, all you got was a 30 min show on espn every day and maybe an hour on sat and sun, and before that maybe a 1 hour show on wide world of sports on sundays. i guess what i am saying is that it is good they have advertisers, because if they didn't we would not be watching the tour everyday live.

FYI - this is the first year that the Tour broadcast has been able to
insert local advertising. Prior to this year there was no technical
support for anything other than the network feed spots. Sounds like the
issues some of you are experiencing stem from this change.

That's the story I heard from my sponsor at the time we were filming our
ads to run during this period. Hopefully our ads don't spoil anyones
coverage here in Bend!

I believe Comcast needed OLN to be on the basic cable package because
they broadcast NHL games, and it was the only way to get the viewer
numbers required by NHL. Not sure if it was true.

I also inquired about getting versus again, and all it will take is a
new digital plan that is over $40 more per month. For TV? Ish.

No, they didn't, I will explain. Before digital conversion, you could get
the channel for free, even though it was not part of the basic service. It
was a bene that is now gone! For 3 years I thought it was part of the basic
package. I was informed yesterday that it has not been part of the basic
package for 5 years. I told them I have gotten it for 3 years and that is
when Comcast explained to me that it was a little extra free channel we have
been getting, which depended on your locations, and not part of our basic
package.

At least you get to watch the TdF. When Comcast made the switch to digital
they removed Versus, E & AMC from the "poor mans cable" so I have to watch
bits on youtube & off the net, which is horrible. I can get those channels
if I upgrade my package... for a fee. Thanks Comcast!

If you have high-speed internet, go to athde.net. It is a Pakistani site that
streams sports and other programming 24/7. It works best on WIndows-based
PCs/laptops.

At least you get to watch the TdF. When Comcast made the switch to digital they removed Versus, E & AMC from the "poor mans cable" so I have to watch bits on youtube & off the net, which is horrible. I can get those channels if I upgrade my package... for a fee. Thanks Comcast!

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but beginning yesterday
Comcast began scrambling several HD channels that HDTV owners could get for
free. We had basic service and could get a large number of "free" HD
channels as incidentals. VS was one of many (CNN, ESPN, it goes on). Comcast
informed me that they have begun scrambling those channels and there are
more to come. To correct this, we have to upgrade our service and buy the
next package, really disappointing. Seems like a racket. Are there any other
alternatives to upgrading the service and getting free HD channels?

FYI - this is the first year that the Tour broadcast has been able to
insert local advertising. Prior to this year there was no technical
support for anything other than the network feed spots. Sounds like the
issues some of you are experiencing stem from this change.

That's the story I heard from my sponsor at the time we were filming our
ads to run during this period. Hopefully our ads don't spoil anyones
coverage here in Bend!

I watched yesterday's early morning TdF broadcast, the coverage was interrupted by commercials with less than 300 meters to the finish. I had to sit through several commercials before I knew the results. The evening re-broadcast was fine. This was on Eugene Comcast.

No commercials after 7k on Direct TV as well. In fact, Liggett said that it would be the last commercial break.  These commercials have nothing to do with the Versus feed, as they are inserted right over the race and often right in the middle of Liggett's commentary.  The fact is that Comcast is not doing any of there advertisers and favors becuase the ads only serve to enrage the viewer rather than make the viewer more likely to buy the prodcut. As a result contact the advertiser and mention that their commercials are making you less likely to buy the product.

Dish network's last commercial was at 7k to go. HD also. Directv could very well have been the same. There are commercial spots for carriers(cable and sat companies), that are not control by the network(versus).

Craig,

There are two forms of advertising: One is sold by Versus to pay for the
airing of such sports as the TdF (TIOOYK) and local adverts (Leif's, Dosha
come to mind) to pay for local rights/distribution.

I have yet to see the end of the race, so I have no idea who/what was
advertised. If you see the commercial, that will give you an idea as to who
sold the air time (national vs local).

That is correct, providers establish the breaks and send out the
message to the carrier to insert a commercial or they insert there
own. However, if you would like to blame Comcast go ahead, they are
the owners of Versus. Anyone interested in FiOS TV let me know, that
is if you live in an area that is served.

While that's a legitimate beef, I believe the beef would be with Versus, not
Comcast. I'm sure DirecTV's broadcast of VS programming, including
commercials, is exactly the same as Comcast's, or any other carrier. They
just broadcast the stuff; programming and timing of commercials are the
responsibility of the network that's carrying the event.

I freaking can't believe that Comcast stuffed in another ad right at the
finish of the live presentation of the TdF today. That is just incredibly
unbelievable! Completely missed the finish.I've already earlier called
Comcast about those irritating ads and they pleaded ignorance. I'm ready to
move to another carrier.
