Crook County Crush July 18th

Doug Evans

2009-07-23

I wasn't able to make it last weekend, but purely from the rave reviews
and the fact that the Cat 1 race was a hefty 3.5 hours long, I will try
to make it a part of my plans next year.

I hope this race happens again next summer. I would like to ride/race
it.
I think promoters do the best they can and we racers need to be at all
the
races we feel we can / want to make. I never expect a race situation to
be
perfect for me... or others. I expect it to be the same for all of us,
thus
an even field so to speak. I do not think we need blaming of those not
making races. There is already enough blame in this society. In the
end
races will either evolve and survive, or die. There will be many
reasons
and blame is not one of them.

I first rode this ride in 1995 and it is my all time favorite ride I
have ever done, and I have done some pretty great rides. I had to pull
some strings to get the day off so I could race it. I agree with Evan
this was a great event.

One of the best courses in my 15+ years of racing in oregon. Also the perfect time of year to race here. Shame on those who blew it off.

This race was a lot of fun to watch (and ride)! The riding out there looks
phenomenal; both road and mountain.

Kevin did an excellent job!

Thanks to Kevin & his family, Half Fast Velo, and all of the other "behind the scenes" people for putting on this race. In all honesty, a paved climb is not my favorite start to a mountain bike race, but the 12 miles or so of singletrack (for the Cat 2 race) was indeed a great time. Brutal climb (the last 2 miles was a real killer for me), and the descent was a work-out as well.

The camping was a great bonus. We found a nice unimproved spot really close to the course start that my family loved. Creeks to explore, critters to see, beautiful weather. I hope you can pull this race off in the years to come.

I just spent the morning with a chain saw clearing most of the blown down trees. The trail is in great shape. It will be an epic race.

There are lots of camping options. Ochoco Resevior, Ochoco Ranger Station, and Walton Lake all have campsites. Just past Ochoco Ranger station there are lots of options for creek side unimproved camping.

Friday night check in (still the early bird discount) will be available at the park just north of the Chamber of Commerce at 390 NE Fairview.

See you soon,

Kevin Thompson
