OUCH - music

Scott Fitzwater

2009-07-26

I was riding just yesterday on the Marine Drive bike path between 33rd and
the 205 bridge when I came up behind a couple of riders who were having a
conversation using sign language. Difficult as it may sound, they were
riding and signing. Unfortunately, they were riding side by side across the
width of the path. I announced "on your left" in the hopes that one of the
riders could hear. Nope, no reaction. Louder didn't help either so I
carefully slide up along one side. When they finally did see me
peripherally, they moved over and I got by. Seemed like confusing behaviour
to me.

Are deaf people prohibited from racing because they can't hear?

What about plain ear plugs? I know at least one veteran racer who wear
earplugs to cut wind noise.

I am a "veteran racer who wear earplugs," main purpose being to soften
the loud noise of traffic.  I must stress that these plugs do not cut
the sound out, I am not riding w/o being able to hear.  These plugs are
the soft 'n spongy orange ones bought at Sanderson Safety Supply, and I
actually cut them down so they are more a light cover in the ear canal
rather than filling as much as they would otherwise.  Hearing is an
important part of riding safety!

(Interesting question about deaf riders, Dan.  Any comments on this?
What about deaf drivers...spooky not being able to hear a siren...)

Not to mention common sense also forbids
depriving yourself of a major sensory system when your safety, and that
of others, is at stake.

Rick, I understand music or radios are against OBRA rules but "safety of
others"? Is OUCH not a time trial? I can't imagine a scenario where a deaf
person would put others at risk in a TT.
