Greetings Northwest cyclists and sports editors,

Northwest Race Reports.com (http://nwracereport.com/index.html) had a record

number of page views (12,137) and a near-record number of unique visitors

(1,216) on Monday. Our ad rates are still cheap and we?ve signed on a

couple of advertisers who will come on line after our redesign due for

completion in a couple weeks.

Today?s feature by publisher Jeff Nachtigal is about women racing in the

Northwest. If you were at the Subway Snohomish Road Race April 30, you

likely heard the buzz ? the women?s CAT 4 race numbered 48. This left one

USCF official, his mouth agape, speculating that it might be the biggest

women?s field he?d ever seen.

The reason for the big fields are several programs launched about two years

ago by two very dedicated and forward thinking women: Heather Johnston and

Wendy Wahl, both from Seattle. The cover girl for the story is CAT 3 racer

Mindy Ziffren of Seattle, who like many women benefited from those programs.

That picture was made on Sunday at the Boat Street Criterium.

Which brings me to the racing this past weekend. At the Boat Street Crit, no

real fireworks occurred. Both the men?s and women?s marquee races stayed

together and both were won by fast finishers. Saturn rider Kenny Williams

and Gregg?s Cycles/VW rider Emily Westbrook both out gunned their

competition down the home stretch to take top honors.

At the Kings Valley Road Race, the outcome was similar, but on a much

different course. This is an up-and-coming event and I encourage anyone who

hasn?t race it to do so next year. The course was very challenging, with

one long grinding climb, a lengthy sprinter?s hill and some long stretches

of flat, open roads ? the climbers couldn?t drop the TT guys and the TT guys

couldn?t stay clear of the climbers.

Again, Williams won the men?s race and despite reports that super model

Naomi Campbell won the women?s race, it was in fact won by Bike Gallery

rider Naomi Gologly ? a slight reporter?s error there and one I?m sure he?ll

live down? some day.

Okay, this weekend we?ll have limited coverage of the action in Eugene and

feature coverage of the Seward Park Spring Criterium on Saturday and then

the Vance Creek Road Race in Elma on Sunday.

These are two solid events that should feature some of the Northwest?s top

talent. Look for multiple national junior champion Tyler Farrar of the

Broadmark squad to win at Seward. Although his teammate and BARR champion

Mike Hone is very clever on this course and is due a win? and I?m sure I

just made that more difficult for him, so good luck Mike.

And lastly? We lost cyclist recently. As I?m sure many of you know, veteran

cyclist Joe Hailey died Friday. His death was the result of a crash a couple

days prior. Like most, I knew Hailey as the guy on the pink bike who wasn?t

afraid to hand out advice, sometimes from clear across the velodrome.

Say what you will about Joe, but know that he was a cyclist. Not a bike

rider, but an athlete who loved, like most of us do, the greatest sport on

earth.

And? I?ll see you at the races.
