Subject: [OBRA Chat] Introducing: Oregon Junior Cross Series

Let me introduce the 2009 Oregon Junior Cross Series (Oregon JCS).

Through generous sponsorship from:

Pacific Power Willamette Valley Cycling

Kona USA Sellwood Cycle Repair OBRA

We bring you an 8 race Junior Series featuring 6 Junior categories ages 10 to 18, boys and girls, and a separate 30 min Junior only race (no adults). I want to thank Sal Collura and Jeff McNamee for agreeing to host the JCS as part of the Psycho Cross & Willamette Valley Cross race series (that includes State Championships this year). I am still trying to get one Portland race into the series. Come on Barlow!

With full support from Brad and the Cross Crusade crew we have taken advantage of Saturday events and their "slightly" smaller attendance to squeeze in a dedicated Junior ONLY race. This permits the youngest Juniors in Oregon to race in accordance with OBRA rules (No under 12 juniors can race with adults - a good rule). It also provides a smaller, skill matched field appropriate for Juniors new to the sport.

We have the most awesome cross scene in the US. Our neighbors up in Washington have done a fantastic job with Juniors through the Rad Racing program. It is time for Oregon to step up and nurture Junior Cross Development.

We have great sponsorship, and great awards for the series. Three new Cross frames, medals 10 deep, tons of swag. We want every kid involved to walk away with something from this series.

Heavily discounted entry fees (thanks Kenji and OBRA). A cross clinic provided on each race day. No reason not come out and give it a try. No previous race experience required. Spread the word!

I am hoping we will see many Portlanders make the drive south. We have nationals in Bend this year. This is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to bike racing, or further advance their skills. Cyclocross has the most festive and supportive atmosphere of all bike racing. It's confined and easy to access lap courses makes it easy to provide help for new to the sport Juniors. No one is left behind in Cyclocross. Everyone is cheered, racing the race within the race. Perhaps the best entry point for a Junior into the fantastic sport of bike racing.

Take a look at the attached flyer (Kenji will send/post). Please spread the word and encourage kids to consider the series. If you want to participate in sponsorship or support just let me know! If you have any suggestions how to make this series better, more enticing, please pass that along as well.

Special thanks to Pacific Power and their continuing support of bike racing in Oregon; Erik Tonkin for his passion about Cross, Junior support, and making this series happen; Mark Matson and KONA USA you guys rock! Thanks for jumping on board; Kenji / OBRA thanks for your encouragement and helping sort out the details.

I look forward to seeing you at the first ever, 2009 Oregon JCS.
