Don't do a thing to your mountain bike to make it more suitable for
cyclocross.

I raced my first season of CX on my MTB-- the only thing I did was
buy a pair of inexpensive ($15 each) 1.25 knobby tires. My 2.5 tires
were just grabbing too much mud.

Before the season was even over I had vowed to buy a real cyclocross
bike for the next season. And I did. You will too! :)

You'll just be wasting your money on the fork, wheels, etc. Save that
for a real cyclocross bike. Seriously-- for the price of a rigid
fork, wheels, tires, and a cassette, you could probably buy a used CX
bike or put a good down-payment on a new bike.
