Subject: [OBRA Chat] Daryl Alosa DLBF

Hello,

I was in Corvallis and heard the news of Daryl's passing. I was shocked....well like anyone that you know who dies you are left feeling empty and confused as to why, what, how...ect...just empty... and this is very hard, and we have lost a great person that embodies the enduring mountain bike spirit in Oregon. I can't even recall how long I have known Daryl, other than along time, and that every time he came to one of my events, and or I was racing and saw Daryl, and said hi to a friendly face, I felt like part of the family was in attendance. I saw Daryl at many Mudslingers and when I started the TOE 50 in 2005 he signed up, he was aprehensive, I was the optimist, and I was very excited that someone that loves to ride, and give it his all regarless of how he finished he was going to do a 50 mile mountain bike race with over 8000 ft of climbing. Daryl had a heart stint, and at 57 at the time was one of the oldest competitors and I worried about him, and in the same breath admired his perseverence in finishing each of 4- 50 milers as the DLBF (dead last but finished). Many times we would talk and he did not know if he was up for 50 miles in March or April and each year he came and finished in 8 or 8.5 hours but always finished with the biggest smile that anyone could have. Just 7 weeks ago after another succsessful 50, he commented "Mike I am starting to have quite a collection of these" referring to his trophies for finishing. That was 7 weeks ago, and in memory of Daryl, all of my endurance events will be named the Daryl Alosa DLBF award to honor more than a bike racer/rider, but a friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

Mike
