OBRA,Masters,Tony,Candi,

Lets all give Mr. Kic some room here. His team has graciously offered to

put on a race for us bike racers.

Like he said they are "freshman" at putting on a race [ note: women 4-5

category. Women have no category 5]

As Candi pointed out, the fact that they advertised a "Masters" category

technically means 30+. However, in the state of Oregon, "Masters"

USUALLY means 35+. Most masters are aware of this. I think very few 30+

masters would enter the masters category anyways?

Soooo, just have one race, two categories like other promoters have

done. 35-44 and 45+.

I think this would please "almost"

everyone? Isn't that the goal?

Lets not discourage them from having a "sophomore" effort!!!

FYI: I have no personal interest in this matter, I will not be at the

race.

Tony, I think the only choice you have is to beg older Masters to

come to your event and then poll the riders that show up at the line

to find out if they will consent to split the field on the basis of

age. I think that would work, but the final say would rest with

OBRA... You've advertised a "masters" race, and I believe that means

all masters are eligible to ride. You can't subsequently limit the

field. The penalty, of course, is that given your announcement, few

riders over 40 or 45 will bother to show up for the Masters race, and

the 30 year old riders will cannibalize your cat 1/2 and cat 3 fields.

Jerry Powell

so, many astute riders have noticed our indecision in the matter of

the cutoff age for our masters group. ideally, we would have enough

vehicles, voulenteers, and time to provide two seperate categories

for our more "experienced" bike racers. alas, only able to provide

for one group left us to define an age, and having no idea what to

do we sought concensus among people whe knew about this sort of

thing. logic being that if you were younger than __ age, you could

easily integrate into one of our other lovely categories. the age we

worked out is apparently not a good one, and we are certiantly open

to comments and suggestions. i know, it's kind of last minute, but

being our freshman effort we are very humble and willing to change

things. thanks for the patience and input- tony kic, gentle lover.

Tony,

I would prefer to see a masters 35+ field, because I'm

35. So that's my vote. Here's one suggestion: put the

35+ and 45+ together in the same field, and have the 45+

riders wear a tag on their back so they can identify who

they're competing with (i.e. if a breakaway happens,

someone who's over 45 can tell if they have to go with

it, or if they can just sit in the field). Another

option would be to put all the masters 35+ and 45+ in

one field, competing for the same purse, but limit the

35-44 age riders to cat 3 or below. That way, the

strong masters will race with the seniors.

I'm confused; the flyer on the OBRA web page clearly says "Masters 45+ men,"

so what flyer doesn't specify the age? The printed one? I'm pretty sure the

45+ age group specified on the web flyer is the one to which Tony refers.

Why not run all the 35+ together, but score 45+ separately. It seemed to

work in Banana Belt, and addresses the volunteers issue. It is not as ideal

as a solo 45+ race, but accommodates more people. It also makes for a

larger field, which can be too small with 45+ only.

Tony-

What does this message mean? or intend to mean? Since you had no age on

your flyer the default age for masters is 30. It is too late to change that

now. What is it you want to do?
