I agree Cheryl. That volunteer spirit needs to be a big part of OBRA
officials. A volunteer (unpaid) is more apt to go to the promoter and say I
am not going to take this crap from these people anymore and walk away or
not show for the next race in a series. Even though the pay is modest for
officials, I believe the fact they do get paid and have been trained is
enough to give them the personal fortitude to make the sometimes tough
decisions. I am a total worker bee person and you might have noticed that I
have NOT stepped up to be an official. I volunteer in other areas because I
do not feel like I would be a good official. I am impressed with the
quality of people who have done the official work at races I have attended.
Very professional, yet very down to earth real. They are receiving good
training and we are lucky to have them and anyone else stepping up to do the
same quality work. Thanks officials. Your commitment to your
responsibilities is much appreciated. You are a key part of OBRA.

I think the pay for officials is low enough that they still need a
"volunteer spirit" to work as an official. Not complaining about official
pay but often it is a huge effort for a modest sum.

Shawn,
I do not understand your logic, but maybe its just me. I say good luck
trying to get a group of people together to volunteer to be officials. First
you'll have to find officials willing to volunteer there time. Officials do
a lot more than people think, they aren't just corner marshals or feed zone
helpers. We get there early, stay late, and deal with issues days after
races.

Just a thought on volunteers vs. paid officials. Just because someone is
paid does not guarantee better quality. It may help with attendance but
unless they really want to be there you are going to run into the same
frustrations with work quality. Over the past several years I have overseen
many volunteers and paid individuals. I'll take volunteers any day of the
week. Most of the time they want to be there and they're willing to help as
long as you ask and realize that without them you/your event are nothing.
Be there to serve them don't tell them to serve you. It saves a lot of
money and headaches.
