Portland Traffic Changes

While pedaling up Broadway this afternoon, I was interviewed by a KPTV reporter asking for my opinion of the changes to the bike/parking lanes. The film, (or at least what doesn't end up on the cutting room floor), will go on the tube at 4PM. I'm the old guy in a long sleeve red jersey choosing his words very carefully.

Who knows? It might work.

Michael,

I sat on the technical advisory committee, and I'll just summarize by saying I think it will work.

bikes in the bike lane will have room to turn left at the intersection and there are no cars turning right the length of this project.

There are some major changes being made on SW Broadway by PSU. This the PDF
file for the proposal.  Note that there is no mention of buses.  As of
today, the bus stop structures are still in place.  Further, I saw no
allowance for handicapped parking.

Here's the schematic of the new left turn process.  It looks like a
bicyclist will have to find a gap in the parked cars and then crosss two lanes
of traffic.

My opinion is that this is another "look good on paper" move and has all
the earmarks of a disaster waiting to happen.
