Looking back in the OBRA archives I see that this thread occurs every year.
The answer is always some flavor of : There is more snow on the course than
you were lead to believe. The snow did not matter as the race was fun. In
fact it is the best course of the early season. Several people used shovels
and motos to clear the course, and they are the only ones with grounds to
complain. I wish this race was later in the season.

If you don't succeed in getting a hold of Petr it is possibly because he
is out of town. In years past he has even been out of state - returning
7-10 days before the event. During that time he often camps at Bear
Springs and works on preparing the course full time. Cell coverage is
typically not reliable enough to reach him if that is the case.

It is a tough race to put on.......and a tough great course when dry. I
think that majority of Cat 2 and Cat 3 people and for the race sake could of
had a good update on what to expect 2-4 days out.....I know most people who
have raced alot can be prepared to deal with snow, running and weather but
an accurate course update is always a good thing for new riders and in
general. IF any of you remember the freaky storm of 07 and the Test Of
Endurance 50.....40 degree's no sunlight, 2 inches of rain starting Friday
before the event...ect...... and harsh for the second week of June after a
nice week in the 70's. I had complaints as too, worse course ever.......that
was the hardest thing I ever did.....it was rough and I spent weeks and 1500
miles to get the course ready.Then last year sunny, go figure, the ones that
did well in 07 had fenders and were prepared...some even were faster than
06...a dry year. Being prepared is what is all about both mentally and
Physically and everyone has a right to an opinion. ALso taking gear with you
just incase the weather turns is also a great idea.....who trusts the
weather forecast completely?

All and all we all push through, and while its not desirable to run,
everyone needed Lake WInter shoes, or a little more gear and happy
toes......from the sound of it

Great job again at getting the course open Petr and making the toughness
come out in Oregon racers......Now on to May and sunny days ahead.

If new rules are made I suggest that any race Petr puts on would be exempt. He is the most old school promoter around. No clean courses free of obstacles, no e-mail stuff, bad course markings, late results, you see the course map when you show up for the race, terribly difficult races, and I love it that way. We have plenty of "modern" races to do.

I have been friends with Petr for 20 years and and will review what took place and create a set of weather guidelines to have as guidelines, such as less than 3 inches of snow, ect, how much of a % of the course is running, like less than 10%. Bear Springs is responsible to you the racer as far as an accounting of what to expect for race day conditions and how it will effect the future turnout of the event, year to year.

Curious to know if there is any word on the upcoming Bear Springs races in light of all the snow that has been dumping in the mountains. Is there a possibility of this race taking place at its regularly scheduled slot or perhaps sliding in the calendar like it did last year?
