Joseph A. Field
We're one week away from our first race and what may be your first blind
date in many years, so here are some general updates. On Monday night,
Tony set up a super cool course and Alpenrose had the dairy lit up like
a Christmas tree, complete with intricate shadows in all of the critical
sections. Our Blind Date test team blasted around the course with ear
to ear grins! Several commented that the Blind Date course is better
lit in the back corners than Star Crossed. All agreed that the matrix
of shadows from Alpenrose's mixed lighting adds some unique and fun
challenges. The course features an asphalt start and finish, a high
speed gravel section, packed dirt, a loose dirt run up, switchbacks,
grass, meadow, barriers and some deceptively challenging little hills.
Note: If it rains, please replace the word"dirt" with "mud!" Alpenrose
has spent thousands of dollars on lights and electricians so we can come
race our bikes at night! Although Alpenrose asks nothing from us in
return, Tony and I request that you buy lots of Alpenrose dairy products
and Baskin Robbins ice cream. If your grocer does not carry Alpenrose
product, please make a special request or patronize a store that does!
Here are some important event details:
Website:
www.crossseries.com (if you have friends
who are newcomers to cross, please show them the video it takes a few
seconds to load, but gives a great feel for Oregon cyclocross).
You can download an event flyer and course map from the website.
Schedule Changes:
Category B women will race with the Category C men and Beginner women at
6 pm and not at 6:50 pm as previously posted. Here is the updated
schedule:
5:00 PM............ Kiddie Cross............. 10 minutes
5:00 PM............ Toddler Cross........... 5 minutes
5:10 PM............ Junior Male.............. 35 minutes
5:10 PM............ Junior Female............ 35 minutes
6:00 PM............ Men C...................... 45 minutes
6:00 PM............ Women B................. 45 minutes
6:00 PM............ Beginner Women...... 45 minutes
6:50 PM............ Men B...................... 45 minutes
6:50 PM............ Singlespeed............... 45 minutes
7:50 PM............ Men A...................... 1 hour
7:50 PM............ Women A................. 1 hour
Race Categories Issues:
1. Men and Women Masters and Clydesdales etc. should pick the field
that suits them best.
2. Beginner men should start in the back of the men's C field.
3. Fields will be scored per the schedule above.
4. The scheduled duration for each race should be for the middle of
the pack. Slower racers may finish sooner and faster racers may ride
longer to complete their extra lap.
Parking Issues:
1. Please try to park in the first parking lot on the right when
you enter Alpenrose. Please enter in the downhill (northerly) entrance
from Shattuck Road. The uphill (southerly) entrance is for dairy
business. The dairy operates at night and we need to avoid interfering
with its business operations.
2. Overflow parking will be available inside Alpenrose on the road
towards the Velodrome beyond the first parking lot and in the adjacent
grass field to the right. The cyclocross course will use most of the
grass field to the right and will use all of the pavement commencing at
the end of the first softball field to the left. You must park before
the end of the first softball field.
Lighting Issues:
1. Helmet lights are not allowed.
2. Handlebar mounted lights are allowed, but must point down at
least 45 degrees.
3. Five demo lights will be available from Light On!
4. The later races will be in the dark. The course will be lit
with brighter and darker areas and shadows of varying degrees. Lighting
will be one of the variables in this cyclocross series. Alpenrose has
spent thousands of dollars supplementing its lighting systems to
facilitate our races. We have supplemented Alpenrose's lighting with
three generators and numerous shop lights in critical course sections.
5. Our course lights will go out at 9:30 pm!
Registration Issues:
1. Race Numbers: Do not bring your OBRA or OBRA Cross numbers. We
will assign race numbers on site. Keep your number for the entire four
race series.
2. Pin your race number on the left side of your jersey, parallel
to the seam under your armpit.
3. Field sizes will be limited. To ensure your place in each race,
sign up for the entire series and Do not lose your race number!
4. PLEASE print, fill out and sign and OBRA release before
registration and bring it with you to the race.
5. The registration will be in Alpenrose's "Quarter Midget"
registration area. This is behind the bathrooms on the left side of the
Alpenrose entrance road to the Velodrome. To get to the registration
area, you will need to walk across the cyclocross race course. Please
do so with extreme caution.
6. T-shirts are available to those who sign up for all four races
for $10 additional. T-shirts are available on a first come first serve
basis. Quantities are limited. T shirts may be available after the
first night for $15.
7. Pre-registration is not available.
8. Race fees; Kiddie Cross free; Juniors $8, Seniors $15 per race,
$60 for seniors for four race series (plus $10 for t shirt); $32 for
juniors for four race series. T-shirts $15.
9. If you register for the entire series, please check in each week
so we can be sure to get you scored.
Food Issues:
1. Food will be available on site from Madison Grill.
2. Feel free to bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages.
3. Please clean up after yourselves.
Have fun, race fair and hope you all win!
