parking

Although I agree that charging a fee for parking is likely to be a
great idea (certainly it seemed to work well at Kruger's), can we talk
about the real issue here: why are so many people driving to a bike
race that is happening in Portland? I can understand carpooling to
places like Rainier or Hornings or even Barton Park, but Portland? I
know there are logistics to negotiate--I have children--but there is
something really awful about riding up to a race that is at most 40
minutes by bike from most places in Portland only to feel as if I've
arrived at the mall.

I agree with Shane in general. This was the worst parking situation I have seen at the Dairy. I am very sure there were some upset people for various reasons in and around the parking area on dairy property and out on roadway/in the neighborhood. I saw some examples of parking that I would best describe as "self-centered". Some of those were out of desperation as the day unfolded, but the worst were some of the early-on cars parked in weird angles taking two or three spaces etc. On the positive side I saw many people trying to work with drivers coming into the mess to move cars and help them squeeze in etc. Not sure of method to make it better, but Crusade has a year to think about it I guess.
Race course was maybe the best condition I have ever ridden. The overnight rain did not bog it up, but softened up the bumps a great deal and the temp was about perfect for a race. It was fun helping the kids do their races.

Everything was outstanding yesterday. I was amazed with the huge vendor area, the mass amounts of spectators; the kiddie race participation... the list goes on. The one thing that could be improved was the parking. I would hate for us to lose Alpenrose because of all the people parking illegally inside and outside the Alpenrose parking lot. People were park in fire lanes, ditches, walking paths and more. At least one person parked and blocked several people from getting out. I think that the Alpenrose parking lot could handle everyone that came yesterday if it was managed. I got to the race prior to the first race and the parking lot was a mess.

I try not to point out a problem without a solution and I am not trying to put more work on the Cross Crusade gang. A possible solution would to have parking attendants like at Pain at the Peak or Horning's Hideout. Instead of Cross Crusade handling the parking maybe they would allow an organization to use parking as a fund raiser. Maybe a parking fee could be optional.

Now before you say that you can park yourself just fine and will live with the mess. Maybe a five dollar fee wouldn't be so bad if it meant that we didn't have to worry about losing a venue.

I can't speak for the people parking illegally, but there was plenty of
legal parking if you drove a few (2!) minutes out of your way and just
rode your bike back towards the venue. Pay to park? No please.

We need to have a telethon to prevent this conicide from ever occuring again.

Save the Orange Traffic Cones! We can print T-shirts, have a band, provide refreshments, and.. and...

Well said Shane. The event was spectacular- as usual. The parking at Alpenrose is always a challenge and I agree with Shane that this is a venue that needs parking attendants. I saw some crazy stuff in the parking lot yesterday- drivers moving course cones to make "one more spot", blocking people in, SUVs get into places I would have never dreamed possible, and a couple of frustrated folks driving on the course during races ...one dead cone...I saw it... it wasn't pretty.
