George,
There are a number of logging roads just NE of Manzanita, on the back
side of Neahakanie Mtn. I spent a several weekends exploring them when
producing our 2005 Wicked Ocean 12 hour Adventure Race. There are a lot
of great roads, but a fair amount of hilly terrain. You might be
putting your legs to serious work on a bike with traditional cross
gearing ratios.
You can access the logging roads via one of three access points:
1) Drive S. on Hwy 101 to Nehalem
Turn left at North Fork Road
Turn left at North Fork Roads ... err, see the Google Maps:

Short Sand Cross over Rd is the marker on the above map,
follow it E. to North Fork Rd for the access (also follow
it W. to option 2 below)
2) Just between Neahkanie Mtn and Oswald West parking lots
there is an old gate on the E. side of Hwy 101, just S.
of the bridge over the creek
Park here, and access the roads
3) In Nehalem, one road E. of Schollmeyer Rd, go N.
It looks like a farmers field - but it is public access...
Though you may get dirty looks from him.
All of this land is owned by Long View Fiber. In the past, they are
generally tolerant and fine with public access of their lands. However,
I highly recommend you stay away from roads with active logging
operations, and of course, comply with any newly posted "no access" signs.
I can give you a contact name/person with Long View Fiber if you have
any questions or concerns.
Best of luck, and look the heck out for hunters - I believe it's Deer
season right now. Make certain you wear hunter orange or a similar very
very bright color.
