craigslist bike scam

Make sure you send the bike only to the address that's on the Paypal
account; don't let them give you a different address for shipping. Send by a
shipping method that requires a signature, and will provide you some proof
of delivery.

If the buyer claims they never received your shipment, they can file a claim
and get their money back from Paypal (who will take it back from your
account). You would need to provide some proof of delivery to counter the
claim. Remember that Paypal provides very good protection for the buyer,
too, and that he may be worried that you are going to take his money and
then not ship.

and will only go through Paypal for any person to person sale/purchase
online. I've used Paypal with OBRA and Craigslist members shipping anything
from $500 used forks to $20 derailleurs throughout the states. Shipping a
bike to NYC may be pushing $100 USPS using a free bike box from a bike shop
(performance/bike gallery). It may be over length/girth using UPS or FedEx.
It'll take you time and hassle (ie. handling). Get the money in your Paypal
account first and then ship it.
I've also had broken English responses asking about using military cargo
shipping from Billy in Paraguay. Couldn't give me a straight answer to any
of my questions and didn't understand that I wouldn't ship till 6 weeks
after receipt of money and clearing of funds. I told him to get lost. The
fact that he wants to see pictures is reaffirming if anything. This economy
doesn't lend to selling things quickly or getting good leads on buyers.

Chris, I, and several friends buy non-local bikes off Craigslist, usually
ones that are older and rare. I usually offer to pay for packing and
shipping by a local shop, or get a local friend to do that for me. Its
legitimate to ask for detailed pictures if you can't inspect something
locally.

Of course, its your prerogative whether you want to sell this way, but
speaking for the people I know, they are more reputable than some of the
Craigslist buyers. Paypal is pretty easy to use as a seller, but you may
want to ask the buyer to cover the fee (3% or so).

There are a few steps they can take to make your life miserable. However I
have sold hundreds of components on craigslist with only minor problems over
the years. (+I did have a guy who wanted to by my car and he was off to sea
and would pay me via paypal and use a "handler"... was a scammer)

look up paypal scams for craigslist on google for a guide to know what they
do to scam. Check and see if they have any Ebay history too, that might
help.

Also look at the paypal site for seller help as there are a few things you
can do to insure the item and hold the funds so they can't back it out.
