pedals

I used spd's many years ago with no complaints.  But when I recently got back into mtb and started cx this past year, I wanted to try something new and went with CB for my mtn and cx bike.  I'm not really going to join the debate on which is better or longer lasting.
However this past fall I was doing a lot of bike washing at the cx races and I definitely noticed that the CB were way easier to clean than the spd's, I mean a huge difference!!!
Personally I like the CB's mainly for the 4 sided entry, you step and you go, I'm sure that spd's are just as easy once your foot is trained.  But then again this is also coming from a guy that loves speed play pedals on my road bikes...for the dual sided entry...you step and you go.

+1 to that. I have the same style ATAC’s on my XC and CX bikes, and have never had any issues with mud clogging, maintenance, etc. They work flawlessly in all conditions. I have considered switching to the XT’s, but at this point I have been so invested with the Time’s and they still work great, I don’t see the point in doing it.

I have Time ATACs and have never rebuilt or had to replace a pair. All of mine are the older style, not the Z-style, because I've never worn a set out, replaced a bearing, or had any issues whatsoever with them. They clear mud very well and are bombproof. The set on my main race bike has been used at every 'cross race I've done since 2000, and I train on a set of them every winter. Sometimes I don't even wash the mud out of them between races and they've put up with a lot.

The cleats also seem to last longer than the shoes to which their attached.

Thats nearly 80 races without touching the pedals.
