I am not a promoter of alcohol whatsoever but I do think that the banning of drinking or the tightening of regulations would ultimately be a great loss. This being my first year racing cross has been an amazing experience, full of fun and excitement even with the drinking. No matter what you do and what sort of regulations you set there will always be somebody who steps over the line, period. It is not the beer, it is not the regulations, it is just human nature, there are bad seeds just waiting to sprout no matter the circumstances. I mean, one incident out of how many races?
I personally love the heckling and fan participation of racing cross. In fact somebody yelling wimp at me, or telling me to go faster (no matter what language they used) has actually helped me speed up. and I thank them. One of the big draws to the sport of cross is the atmosphere and I believe that we should keep it harsh!
There is something to be said about the throwing of a beer cans at racers, that is not and should never be something that is tolerated and to the people that stood there and let that happen should be ashamed of themselves. I would have personally escorted that person of the premises instantly, and you should have done the same. Potentially harming somebody you came to watch compete is beyond words.
