That is very correct and the races they put on in the Eugene area are very
good races. I will be there! Camp Harlow can beat me up real good! And
the sand! :-)

Just a shameless plug for the Crossaflixion Cup #1 and #2 in Bend on
November 14th and 28th.

We won't go UCI on your ass (since of course it's an OBRA race) - all
bikes welcome!

All,

I'm new to CX this year. Sadly been afflicted heavily with the disease,
malignant and non-operable Type 1 CX. I'm already looking at the race
calendar and having mild panic attacks about how many races are (or, as
the case may be...aren't) left in the year. I know we've got Cross
Crusade #8 - Barton coming up next weekend... (11/15)...

It also looks like the USGP races are hosted at PIR here in Portland ...
The Cross Crusade website says "open to all". The USGP website doesn't
spell out categories, but the registration site, indicates that Men's C
and Beginner Mens start at 8am. It seems that's the best fit for me
(racing Clydesdale this year).

Has anyone participated in these in the past? I'm still riding a
Mountain Bike - with bar ends. Do they go all UCI on our asses about
bikes, etc... (in the C/Beg cats)?

...then it looks like the last local race is Kruger's Crossing (on
11/22).

I'm not counting Nats in Bend - since it seems us recreational racers
are excluded??? I'm not in the least bit inclined to do 6.5 hours of
driving to get pulled off the race course 1/2 way through ...

So - any feedback on USGP - and am I missing anything else local(ish) to
the PDX area??

Thanks all!

Andy,

Thank you for the detailed response! I look forward to being there,
supporting the USGP race producers, and having fun getting my butt
kicked again!

Shane:

Yes the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross Stanley Portland Cup (December 5 and 6)
does have OBRA races in the morning and USAC/UCI races starting about 11:45
on both days ( December 5 & 6 -
http://www.usgpcyclocross.com/RacesResults/StanleyPortlandCup.aspx).

This is the last Portland-area cyclocross race of 2009 currently on the
calendar. On line registration (
http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=9169) closes 6pm Pacific
Time on December 3rd.

The OBRA races will go by OBRA rules, which permit flat bars, choppers,
irregular triangles and fatboy slicks, if you want.
* Pointing forward bars? No.
* Motors, tow bars, handups/hand downs? No.
Standard OBRA fare, officiated by our stalwart OBRA officials following well
known OBRA rules.

Depending on where you placed and where you want to place, it sounds like
either the C race (8:00) or the B race (9:30) would be good choices. The
USGP/OBRA staff will do their best to NOT pull riders and give them a full,
as-advertised race duration. Weather conditions, speed of riders, length
(time) of course, and other things that impact the need to keep moving
forward may create some changes, but we will try to anticipate them.
Realizing that, remember that this is not a perfect world, but we try.

----

Since we are on the USGP and I hear this, you get to hear it too: PIR has
two major points for participant behavior at this event:

* Riding on the RACE TRACK (the paved track where summer monday/tuesday road
races are held) is NOT permissible.
While there are Christmas lights out, this is a bigger issue this year in
large part due to disrespect shown by bicyclists on the track to PIR staff
during this event in previous years. There will be repercussions to racers
during this event and to future events if people do ride on the PIR race
track during this event. Yes, you can ride directly from the south paddock
to the pro paddock (CX race course), but not before or beyond that on the
track.

*Only park on pavement.
There should be parking staff to assist your parking, but in no case should
anyone park on grass anywhere. There is irrigation and other
landscape/infrastructure work that can get pretty hosed up if driven over by
a car when the ground is soft, soggy and/or saturated.

Give me a holler if you have more questions.

Yeah,
And race the A race, there is plenty of room. Then you get to race the VERY last race of the year. And if you are in last place(like me) you can be the last person to be racing in the state for the year. I did that last year and did enjoy that feeling. Kind of like winning, but kind of the opposite:)

Carpool with someone and race two races. That will help to justify the drive. There is a great deal of satisfaction in crossing the finish line on the very last day of racing for the year.

Hey Sal and Thom - yeah, thanks! The Psycho Series looks really
interesting. It's just hard to justify 4 to 4.5 hours of driving
(round trip) for 45 minutes of racing ... I might sneak down to one
of them just to get my fix, though ... :-)

HA!...there are about 50 of us from Bend that drive to Portland and back (7
hours) every weekend to race...I can't wait for Nats when I can ride to the
course!

(in the C/Beg cats)?

...then it looks like the last local race is Kruger's Crossing (on 11/22).

Thanks all!
