9 spd better for mud and grass? Data needed

My 8 speed did better in the mud. My 9sp Dura Ace packed up and got
chain suck badly (almost ripping of my rear derailleur) on Sunday.

I run 9 speed without a problem... of course single speed would cure all
those shifting problems right? I have it from a professional racer that 10
speed works fine as well, but the chains wear out earlier, thus need
replacement more often. I have no scientific data, but it seems to me there
are more "broken" 10 speed chains.
I say stick with whatever works for you, but expect the big component makers
to only offer the lower end 8 and 9 speed (10 as well for Campy?) stuff as
time goes on. This is how they "urge" the consumer into finally going to 10
and 11 speed or whatever is the latest thing.
Hey! I use bar end shifters and they work fine for me... I do not need to
pay 2-4 hundred dollars for those fancy brake/shifter combo gizmos and they
are lighter. Anyone who thinks they cannot take their hands off the bars to
shift, needs think about how all those riders before them managed to ride
and race. I don't finish at the back of the pack because of my componentry
nor does Erik using 8 speed. Yes. Be thankful for 8 and 9 speed riders!

You can buy the cassettes. And I run campy 10spd shifters with them.
Works great.

8 spd is king. You can dump pea gravel in the cassette and it doesn't care! Never been stopped by grass, mud, small children, or the random squirrel with 8 spd. Campy a step up from shimano.

Can you buy 8 spd anymore?

In hindsight, I would have finished the race in better position (not DNF) if I would have just shouldered the bike and hiked the course.  The mud was cement.  I have no idea how others kept the wheels turning.  Sorry, but I prefer a dry kermesse any day!  Oh, gotta go spend an hour or so deep cleaning the Gunnar and trying to get the clay off my white handlebar tape.   LOL!!!

10 speed is a gimmick IMHO, but I have not had horrid issues with the mud.
The sand maybe, but not the mud.

I think you got lucky. There is very little spacing difference between 9 and 10 spd cassettes.
